I guess it's kind of like a silly, unrealistic thread asking "which limb would you give up if you had to feed a barracuda?" The natural instinct is to look for loopholes. E.g.: pass on the pick and be prepared to jump in later, a la the Minnesota Vikings.

My right leg. Since shredding my hip muscles, it doesn't function very well anyway. And it couldn't hurt any more than it does now.
In terms of the #1, I think you would have to take the most unique player in the draft, regardless of talking headery. I'm thinking probably Cody, freeing us up to let Wilfork walk after '09, or trading him for a #1 pick in an upcoming year.

sorry if i havent responded to some of you guys posts, but i cant post here without my posts being moderated, so my responses may not show up.
Anyways i was thinking if we had the #1 pick in the draft who would we take?
If we franchise Cassel we could then trade him to Detroit along with our 1st round pick #24 for Detroits #1 pick. We may have to add in a 2nd or 3rd but the foundation of the deal would be Cassel plus our #24 pick. Detroit may not want to pick a QB #1, they might not want to have to pay #1 pick money to anyone, they might like the idea of trading down and picking up another 1st and a proven QB in Cassel, but who knows its just an idea. We could also dangle Cassel as trade up bait plus our 1st rounder to move up to #10 pick San Francisco, that would probably be more ideal, but its fun to think of us having the #1 pick in the draft!
If we had the #1 id go with Maualuga or one of the big OT's.
there's no way you're getting the #1 for a system qb

Without trying to take this thread off-topic, your post echos what I've been thinking for the last four years or so, and that is having the #1 overall pick - or a top 5 pick for that matter - hurts your team in the long run. Allow me to explain:
If you're a team picking in the top 5 of the draft (Detroit, St. Louis, KC, Seattle & Cleveland this year) you generally have several holes to fill on your roster before being competitive again. Having said that, you're now saddled with having to tie up a large percentage of your salary cap into one player. So not only did you address just one position, you have to take care of the rest with 10% less salary cap room. Heaven forbid you draft a bust.
On the flip side, if you're a team picking in the 20's or 30's (let's say for example: The New England Patriots ). They have far fewer holes in their roster that need to be addressed than a team picking in the top 5 does. Not only are the Patriots going to get a quality prospect @ #24, but they're only going to tie up roughly 2 million dollars in annual salary to this player, leaving them cap space needed for extensions and free agency. If they draft someone @ 24 that doesn't pan out, it's not as crippling to their salary cap as if he were the first overall pick.
Sorry for taking this slightly OT, but if anyone else has input on this I'd love to hear it.
I see where you are going with this. The money being paid for a kid without one snap in the NFL versus someone who proved himself not in just two games like Schaub, but the whole season without his starting left guard for six games, starting RB and way too few snaps. I was a Cassel disbeliever. He raised my expectations. The Lions do not have a QB or coach. If I am the Lions, I try to swing a deal like swapping choices and a number three. They need to establish credibility with their fans and waiting for a kid to develop is fine if you have some parts already. (the Ravens and a great defense and the Falcons picked up a top RB).The Pats immediately drop down to mid first round or about where the got Mayo and pick up a second rounder. Now the Lions have to spend to get him some top O-Line FA's and a defense player or two to protect him and gain credibility. They have a decent RB and some decent WR.
Maybe Billik or Schottenheimer make sense to have a personality for the team. They do not have one.
The better place for Matt is the Vikings. They are the best team in that division and have a premier RB. They have a better TE than Watson and some decent receivers in Rice and Berrian. They have an outstanding O-Line. They have a better defense than the Pats at this point in time, so Matt does not have to win every game. The Jackson experiment should now be over. He is BAD, very BAD and way more snaps than Cassel to verify that.
They are a QB away from the next level. I am not sure if Elmer Fudd is the best coach though. A number one for Cassel makes sense. Why is it people think he won't draw a first rounder? Box makes a good point. Why take a shot with a kid for guaranteed money? It is a gamble.
I think we can get a first and third for him to the right team.
How about this scenario? Pioli takes the K.C. job, brings in McDaniel and trades for Cassel?..... everyone is on the same page. The Pats get a top five in a first round swap (K.C. keeps a first rounder) and the K.C number two (top fifty pick) plus Gonzales (if he signs for two more years). Can you imagine Gonzales, who wants a ring and is the BB type veteran, catching for Tom to make another SB run? Moss, Welker, Faulk and Gonzales (96 receptions) to cover?
Ben Watson leads the league in tipped ball interceptions and drops combined, but the good news is his blocking has become better. Ben is then the number two tight end in blocking schemes.
I think LJ would be more committed to stay and is still young. They have a good young WR in Bowe and a very young talented D-Line. They have some decent young DB's. They are $30m under CAP so a O-Lineman or two would be added.
The Chiefs had two or three teams beat and couldn't finish (Dolphins and Chargers). They almost nailed us in game one this year. Other than QB, they have talent that might be as good as Denver and the Raiders in their division and can come up with a better coach than Norv to perhaps steal the AFC West in 2009 with Cassel and crew.

It is a different topic, but I'd say that inasmuch as this board agrees on anything, it agrees that the very top of the rookie salary scale is out of whack. It's bizarre that the #1 pick makes three times as much as the player picked #10, when they're both among the very elite college players.

Not to call anyone out, but I've read a number of posts here and in the main forum having wet dreams over the idea of getting the #1 overall pick. If BRIZ had posted this I'd have known immediately where he was coming from. Chris hasn't posted as much on the subject, at least where I've been reading, so I'm just trying to get a handle on his thinking. Yes, the premise of this thread is silly and unrealistic, 77 admitted as much - though he should still be for starting it - but as people post here I would like to understand the thought process they are using, e.g. Seneschal2 was feeling no pain when he posted...
