Sorry if this is OT and needs to be moved but I was just on NFL.com looking to move some players around as i just picked Jennings up off the Waiver Wire hoping he would get over his groin injury. Alas he is having surgery so i though i would have a look at Steve Smith.
There was an interesting write up about some trade speculation about Smith and a move to Detroit for a mid round pick.
If in fact this rumor is true, it got me thinking about whether the value would be there for us to make that trade? and also whether a guy with the explosiveness of Smith could help this offense get some respect against the deep ball.
I know it is only speculation at this stage but its a little bit of food for thought if he is in fact available for trade and how a Smith/Lloyd/Welker Wr Corps could effect this offense. Especially with Hernandez and Gronk not 100%.

I know he's butting heads with Newton and Rivera, but one and possibly both of them may be gone after this season and he just signed a deal that would make him a tough guy to trade because of dead cap and guaranteed money ($7.75M) still due a 33 year old after this season. Especially one who has never played in an offense or with a QB quite like NE's. Not to mention he can be outspoken when things don't go his way and I'd imagine he and Lloyd might struggle to co exist without someone developing an attitude.
Other than that, great idea...
Quote:
4/10/2012: Signed a four-year, $37.75 million contract w/ 2016 Option. The deal contains $16.8 million guaranteed, including a $10 million signing bonus and each of Smith's first three base salaries. 2012: $1 million, 2013: $3.75 million, 2014: $4 million (+ $3 million option bonus), 2015: $7 million, 2016: $9 million (Option Year), 2017: Free Agent
I have all of those same concerns and obviously it's a factor. But remember that these were all of the same things said about Moss in 07.
Will it be a gamble? yes but if you can make the cap work then i think it is also a move that could be a perfect fit for the pats. Giving us the explosive play maker to take away 1 on 1 coverage on the outside that we have wanted.
I am not saying it will happen, but it could be one of those scenarios where you could take advantage of a team in flux.
Geez that is an tough contract to trade though... alot of guaranteed money and much of it in later years when he will be what? 36?
But we could have him for 2012/2013 on the cheap then depending on what the option bonus is, decide not to take up that option and make him a FA. You would really need to read the contract to know the nitty gritty.
You don't want this kid. Everyone in the NFC south only agree on a few things.
One of those is that Steve Smith is a gangsta gutter thug.
He yells at QB's. Yelled at Cam last week. Yells insults at opposing coaches, and his own coach Fox before. Been arrested for assault, and told his whole team to F off once. He is an internal problem.

I forgot, but you really should be looking at Adrian Arrington also. We built him to be a second Colston. He has a higher vertical. He has all the tools and coaching, and was going to play this year except for another fluke injury. We will let him go next season. Right now hes on IR, But Joe Morgan is turning out to be a better Meachem, and we have a Colston already.
Hes a great kid, and a solid #2 WR for cheap. Smart kid, just hasn't had good breaks. I think he would fit well. Im very high on this kid. He even has the name for great baller, lol.
Its like we have become the WR building stable of the NFC,lol, but adrian deserves a hard look from any team. With a great QB, I think, we would be something special.
Smith has true deep speed. But I'm not sure he is worth putting up with. That's the only reason a premiere player like him would be available for a mid to late round pick. Tempting though. Would he fall in line for a superbowl run? If he gets out of hand, we could cut him with pretty much zero drawback except for the wasted pick.
