Default The Impossible Dream: Patriots Completing a Long Pass Downfield

What's up with this? Is it the QB or the receivers? It seems like the never connect. It's an automatic incomplete. Maybe someone ought to tell McDaniels he doesn't have Randy Moss of 07 out there anymore.

This was from the Baltimore game (also in a blog entry I did )

You can see the entire season passing chart here:

2012 Patriots Stats Database

So far through three games:

3/8 Deep Left 111yds (1 of those was Welker's 59yd catch Sunday Night)
2/6 Deep Middle 59yds, 1 TD
0/2 Deep Right

Brady is a horrible long ball thrower. He misses receivers when they are open always overthrows.
(Lloyds fault in first game)

Bet he has thrown as many picks as catches in balls thrown over 40 yards down the sideline.

Give it some time. The Brady-Lloyd experiment is still young and, as you can see, Welker picked up right where he left off in 2011 in terms of being all over the field. The offense, from what I saw, picked up steam this past week and only faltered in crunch time. I'm expecting to be impressed by what I see against the Bills.

I don't think the pass to Welker would qualify as a deep completion. It was about 20 yards in the air and then RAC. IIRC, Brady has completed 1 pass of more than 30 yards in the air in the last 20 games or so.

At the risk of sounding homerish, I think it's getting there.

Brady did connect with Welker on a long ball Sunday night. He came very very close to connecting with Lloyd and Gronk weeks 1 and 2. I think as the season progresses you'll see more connections downfield, especially with Lloyd if they continue having success with the intermediate routes and back shoulder catches. Those are a perfect setup for the long ball.

The league officially scored it as a "deep" throw, which was completed about 20 yards from the original line of scrimmage (their 21yd line). So for the sake of accuracy how they score it is how I scored it

There are some stills here:

You can see the still where he caught it and where they started from in that link.

Missed the Welker catch so I didn't have that one in my memory. To be honest, I'm surprised they have 5. Are those the 20 yard passes with a run after catch? What's the criteria? Helpful chart though, I'll check those stats out again.

"Run after the catch" doesn't make a short pass a deep pass, because they score it "short" even on a long gain if it's caught for short yardage and turned into a big gain. It seems 15+ in the air seems to be the criteria from what I could tell (from the line of scrimmage to where the ball is caught) based on what I've seen so far.
