Welker is under the franchise tag and cannot renegotiate a long-term contract with any team in the NFL. The Patriots could only trade him to a team that wants him for the rest of this year only. The deal would be stupid for both teams- the Pats would probably get a late round draft pick and the trade partner would get a player for 10 games that doesn't even know their offense.

If the Patriots fall out of contention, they might very well trade Welker.

I'm asking around to see if someone with league sources can confirm or deny this. I can't think of an example, but that would likely be due to the fact that teams seldom trade that player let alone that late because you can't generally get anything that will help you this late and because most teams are at their own internal spending and or cap limits (and they would have to absorb the franchise hit at least momentarily).
Apparently, there are some "holes" that are open to interpretation. As an example, there was a "ruling" that the rule about being franchised three times is not on a per-team basis, but on a per-player basis (e.g., if the Pats franchised Welker again in 2013, any team that franchised him a third time would have to pay him top-5 QB money).

So let's assume they did trade WW. JE goes down the next game. Who's your backup slot receiver? Hernandez is out. Winslow has a knee that could be fine but I wouldn't trust it. That's not Branch's position at this stage. There's no Branch on another team to make a second trade with. If Stallworth or Gaffney were worth it they would still be here. I don't see how there's any truth to these rumors given the lack of depth in the receivers.

There's only two conclusions for Patriots fans on rookies. They are either a bust or being fitted for their bust in Canton.

I know you are mocking in good fun, but there REALLY IS A SITUATION HERE with Wes. If you shouldn't talk about it on a fan messageboard, where should you talk about it?

Who did we have in 2010 for the long ball when Moss was suddenly gone?

My point is never say never...when they knew Seymour wasn't going to return the next year they did a trade...when Moss was known not to return they did a trade.

I don't know how Welker would be any different if they decided to go that route.

If Welker is not out there for 60 or more snaps against a top conference team this sunday night with no Hernandez and less depth,it will further implore the possibilities into October.

If anything as Pats fans,we know one thing....The team and Belichick are unpredictable,no one saw it coming 2 years ago.
How do you figure "no one saw it" after Randy Moss had that melt down during a press conference? Didn't everyone see it coming? I know I did and those discussions at the time expected immediate action.
