Default Trade Wes Welker?

I am not here to bash Welker or speculate on his ability or whether or not his playing time was purposefully decreased for any reason other than the game plan at hand.

I think Wes is easily one of the best slot receivers in the league and would be a huge asset to any team, particularly one with a young QB looking for a reliable safe target.

The Patriots have what is easy to see is a very explosive offense and a seemingly improved defense that IMO is one or two upgrades in the secondary away from being as close to a complete team since 2003.

The offense has evolved to where I don't think TB needs to rely so heavily on Wes anymore. We have more true receiving threats - especially inside with the TE's and seemingly an improved running game.

I think his value to the Pats is significantly lower than it was a year ago, but his trade value may have actually increased with so many rookie or 2nd year QB's starting. Given all the weapons an opponent has to game plan for when playing NE, I think Edleman would be an adequate replacement.

Trading Welker for an upgrade over any one of these 4 players: Chung, Gregory, McCourty, Arrington - would be worth it. Interested to hear what the rest of you think.

I would also assume that if Wes were traded he would be free to negotiate a new long term contract with his new team. is this right?

I think you're underestimating how important Welker is to the offense. Imagine if one of Hernadez/Gronk/Lloyd went down and we traded away Welker? Depth is so important, and people need to start realizing this.

Someone needs a reality check. Welker makes Gronk and Hernandez even more effective.

I love this board. When a player doesn't have a statistically high game, he has no value to the team and should be traded. I can only imagine what will happen on here if Ridley doesn't get 100+ yards on sunday.

This offseason, it's almost like Belichick is saying, "I'm never going to let that happen again."

In before epic Ivan meltdown.. you're an idiot!!

And for once I agree with him.

...unless his trade is integral to us getting a young, shut-down corner..

You do realize Welker is owed almost $10M this year, and teams have already set their rosters, right?

If we're going to go wild with overreaction, we might as well go really wild with overreaction....

I think Tom is easily one of the best quarterbacks in the league and would be a huge asset to any team, particularly one with a young HC looking for a reliable safe triggerman.

I think his value to the Pats is significantly lower than it was a year ago, but his trade value may have actually increased with so many rookie or 2nd year HC's coaching. Given all the weapons an opponent has to game plan for when playing NE, I think Mallet would be an adequate replacement.

After all, Tom only threw for under 236 three times last year.
