Default 2012 Patriots Pandemonium Positional Preview ~ Tight Ends

TE Rob "Kong" Gronkowski

Rob "Kong" Gronkowski is a Force...and he has only just begun.

Call me crazy, but what I love most about this guy is his blocking.

He is just brutal out there.

I actually think that Kong is going to take a big step back, this year ~ in terms of TouchDowns.

And I won't pretend I'm not a little concerned about his exploits, this off season.

However, what I think we have here is simply a young guy of ebullient spirit, enjoying himself to the utmost.

Because there is no question about his Passion for The Game.

What makes Kong such a vital part of our Championship Quest is not his stunning stats.

It's the deadly duality of his Game: His ability to slaughter the Enemy downfield as a Receiver, combined with his equally devastating ability to bludgeon the Enemy as a brutal, relentless, lane-clearing Blocker...and the impossibility of any DC knowing which way he's gonna come at'm on a given play!!

If we actually get serious about running the ball this year ~ and I believe we will ~ then it'll be that deadly duality ~ paralyzing opposing DC's ability to simply tee off with the Pass Rush ~ that'll produce Kong's biggest Impact, when we're going toe to toe with the best Defenses in the game in the deepest part of Winter...and in the Super Bowl.

WB Aaron "The Navigator" Hernandez

Aaron "The Navigator" is my boy!!

I was screaming for us to draft this guy in the Spring of 2010 ~ and was initially met with almost universal scorn!! ~ and he was my first ever Super Binkie!! I couldn't believe it when we actually did draft the guy...in the 4th Round!!

* "Wing Back" is my term for the rare sort of Tight End/Flex End/Half Back/Wing Back role that he plays ~ most call it "H-Back", but that's a term too ugly for me to abide...and "Wing Back" goes back 100 years!!

Aaron The Navigator is my #1 Pick for Explosive Break Out Year in 2012.

One thing I recognized two years ago ~ and which made me a rabid fan'f'm ~ was that he's got some Magic.

Nobody in New EngLand navigates the open field like Aaron Hernandez.

His Processing Speed is ridiculous, the man is blessed with a simply freakish Instinct for where the other guy's about to go, and he commands such phenomenal Fluidity that he's able to take complete advantage of it.

The combination of these attributes can be devastating.

And I'm here to tell you that this is the year that he puts it all together...and tears this league apart.

TE Michael Hoomanawanui

TE Michael Hoomanawanui is an outstanding, brutal, punishing Blocker, and has flashed skills as a Receiver. His upside is actually quite intriguing...But he has been nightmarishly prone to injuries. I mean it's been hideous. Even so, if he is needed, at a crucial moment, to step in for Kong, I would be very interested in seeing what he could do.

WB Daniel Fells

WB Daniel Fells is extraordinarily ordinary. I really wouldn't be thrilled to have'm step up for Aaron the Navigator.

Positional Prospectus

1 ~ It has been utterly awesome to watch Bill The Mad (Genius) run rampant in the Tight End Market, this year!! Although the particulars haven't been exactly what I had in mind, Mad Bill's pronounced shift in focus, this year, away from Wide Receivers and dramatically in favor of Tight Ends, has been a dream come true. I've been advocating for this very thing for the last 3 years, and it's startling and shocking to see us actually moving in that direction!!

2 ~ Mind you: The Depth of Talent isn't overwhelming. But at least we've got solid replacements for both Kong and Aaron the Navigator on the roster, and that is an awesome, exciting development!!

3 ~ We don't actually carry any Flex Ends. That...could be an interesting Future Area of Development.

The Future

1 ~ I would really love to see us aggressively seek out High Caliber Depth of Talent at both Tight End and Wing Back in the 2013 Draft. And I would love to see us draft and develop some raw, talented Flex Ends.

2 ~ WB Evan Rodriguez was a magnificent Prospect, who went #111 in the 2012 Draft, and XE Derek Carrier was an exciting UFA who greatly intrigued me. And I would have loved to've grabbed XE Jordan Cameron at #102 or XE Brett Brackett as a UFA in the 2011 Draft. These are the kinds of Values I'd love to see us seek out.

You have ignored Shiancoe, Ballard and Silvestro.

It's early, but the patriots will not "aggressively seek out quality depth at TE" in the 2013 draft.

What happened to Jake Ballard?

You know a 6'-6", 275 pound tight end listed on the PUP list?

If they have to look at TEs next year, we can write this year's series of personnel moves off as a miserable failure.

BB is always looking at TEs, even when he has two pro bowl caliber TEs already.

Barring injury, the Patriots will have Gronk, Hernandez, Hoomanawanui, Fells, Ballard and Silvestro, and Shiancoe would be in play if they wanted him back. There should be no reason to look at TEs in the draft.
