FOXBOROUGH - There has been a new sound emanating from the Patriots' defense this year, one that has caught the ears of everyone from coach Bill Belichick to linebacker Tedy Bruschi to safety Rodney Harrison.
It is coming from Brandon Meriweather, who has been shouting instructions from the secondary with confidence and authority.
Off the field, the second-year safety has a soft-spoken timbre. He's polite, unassuming, and almost timid, but on the field his teammates have noticed a difference both in Meriweather's communication skills and his play. The 24-year-old, who struggled to be heard from at times during his rookie year, has been making noise in training camp - both literally and figuratively - emerging as one of the team's breakout players after the first week.
Definitely worth reading.

I have really big expectations of The Hit Stick this year. He and Mayo are, obivously, a huge part of "younger and faster on defense" and are an absolute key, along with Wheatley and signing Wilfork long term, to taking our defense to a SB level for the next 5+ years.
Very good article. BM is one of the players I'll be watching closely this year on the defensive side of the ball. He was making a lot of good pops last year toward the end of the season (heh, the Ted Ginn one came to mind immediately) and was in the position to make that interception in the Super Bowl. Hopefully this year, he gels in our system and becomes one of the better safetys in the NFL. Just the fact that he's picking the brain of Ed Reed puts a smile on my face.

"On the other hand, Meriweather at FS continues to disappoint. On the Brady to Moss to Brady bomb to Jabar (Remember the TD on this call last year!), Jabar dropped the ball this time. More to the point, Meriweather was in position to break up the pass and failed to make a play on the ball. His inability to track the ball in the air, more than his stone hands, is a fatal flaw to FS play in the NFL. I apologize for the harsh review and am no doubt overreacting to one play, but Ed Reed deflects that ball. Ball skills are essential and I have yet to observe same in Mr. Meriweather."

The gall of a second-year player to not be as good as Ed Reed!!! How dare he?!?
