Default SMY: A long term deal for Welker could be in the works

She is on Sirius NFL radio now and she said that she is hearing that the Pats and Welker are making progress on a deal and we could he about a long term deal sometime in the near future. It didn't sound like we will hear something tomorrow or in the next week, but it sounds like he could have a deal by the summer or even sooner.

EDIT: The summer part is my guess since that is when the Pats really need to have a deal done to have Welker not hold out for training camp and the preseason. SMY made it sound like the deal could be far sooner, but I didn't want to raise expectations too much.

Excellent!! I think? No way do I wanna see Wes playing anywhere else but there is some funny money going around to WR right now. Hopefully this will be team friendly.

Excellent!

I'd made a similar assumption in another thread... That going for the cheaper deep WR in the 31 year old Brandon Lloyd as a short term stopgap would be a good sign for signing Welker long term.

As much as I drool over having someone like Wallace on the team, the reality is he'd be the long term #1 WR and we wouldn't be able to afford both him and Welker long term.

If we can sign both Welker and Lloyd we're in excellent shape for the next 2 seasons.

There would be renewed pressure to develop some young WRs, with both Lloyd and Wlker on the wrong of 30, and Belichcik has not had the best of luck with that, but in the short term we'd be looking pretty good at WR.

But overall if you give me a choice between Welker and Lloyd for three seasons or just Wallace

The signing of Welker to a long-term contract would be the #1 event in the off-season. This signing would solidify our offense for the 2012 and 1013 seasons. I don't know that Welker has much more than that in the tank. That is why the patriots reportedly offered him a 2-year extension.

HOWEVER, I would celebrate the signing at almost any contract terms that Belichick would agree to.

Not sure why you are putting an expiration date on him in 2013, I have seen no evidence at all of him slowing down a lick.

Welker is great no question about it, but I think alot of his success is a result of the QB and the system. We've seen TB make alot of money for alot of WRs and Wes is another.

Not sure Wes would be the player that he is on another team in another offense and I think he knows that.

Hope the long term deal isn't anything over 4 years.

You wonder if an Amendola (younger) coming in for a #2 at 1/4 the price and potentially similar production might be something BB is looking at.

The title of this thread made me laugh.

Like it was news that the Pats and Welker were in the process of working on a deal.

The summer would be too long.

Welker signing sooner would free up cap space now.

Welker, Branch and Lloyd

Thats a good start, but Id like to see another FA or draft pick at WR.

Polian thought the same thing about Manning when he gave him a contract that paid him $26 million to sit on the bench.
