The Pats already had Patten and Troy Brown and then drafted Branch and Givens.

Id say those draft picks worked out OK.

That was a long time ago.

The waste is the using of early draft picks.

I never have a problem with trying to find a diamond in the rough in the late rounds. Givens and Edelman are examples of this success.

How can she be dead wrong about saying today that the player and team are working on a deal? Do you have some kind of evidence that they are not?

Edelman has been a decent return guy and all around handyman, but I find it very hard to call him a success as a WR

Edelman brings more to the table as a DB than a WR.

Id like to see the Pats spend at least a 2nd on a WR. Granted the Pats got burned on Bethel and Chad Jackson/Johnson. After NE picked Bethel, Anquan Boldin, Nate Burleson and Brandon Lloyd were picked. After NE picked Chad, Greg Jennings, Devin Hester and Marcues Colston were there. There are damn good WRs in every draft, NE needs to do a better job of finding one.

The going on the cheap/scrub approach just is not working out in the passing game: Price, Slater, Edelman, PK Sam, then non - draftees like Aiken, Stanback and Underwood.

Crazy idea but I'm not totally convinced the Pats want a long term deal (4+ years) w/ Welker. There has been crazy money and Welker has to be thinking he deserves more than the other receivers who were available. If we simply franchise him again next year we'll have gotten him at 2 years 20-22 mil and give ourselves 2 years to find new receivers who complement Gronk and AHern. We can't be paying Welker, Gronk and Hernandez all at once in '14.

Perhaps after 2 years of franchising him we can sign Welker to 33 year old Welker to a cheaper yearly deal that is longer / more guaranteed than what other teams are offering.

Edelman was drafted in the 7th round. He is still here. He is a decent returner, an emergency defensive back and an OK backup slot receiver. I guess we all have our own definitions of success.

I think you probably have to give Welker 4 years. I'm not sure you get 4 years out of him though... That guy take a LOT of tough hits in the middle, and aside from his ACL tear seems to bounce back up.

But no GM let alone Belichick is going to bank on Welker being healthy and as productive as he has been in his past performance. The smarter and safer thing to do is use the next two years to groom Welker and Lloyd's replacement (assuming we sign both)

Assuming anyone is going to be the exception to the rule of age catching up with them, be it Brady, Welker, or any player, is just foolish. Hopefully you get lucky and they defy the odds for a few extra years, but you never bank on that.
