Boston Globe reports he will be special teamer and back up player.

"contribute on special teams" and "provide quality depth"

The Patriots obviously didn't.

Who do you trust? Some random British guy who has been in IT his whole life and decided to turn his hobby into a paid website, or the Patriots scouting department and Bill Belichick?

If he's making 2-3 million a year, he's starting or playing very prominently in the sub defenses. Only 9 players on the team last year had a cap hit over 3 million. Maybe some of the deal is funny money, but he's not just an STer at anything over 1.5 million.

Ok so now the Globe runs the team.

He is going to compete for a starting spot @ FS and play a ton. In addition to FS, he is going to contribute on nickel and special teams. So in summary, he's a good football player.

100% agree. Most likely a small signing bonus with a small first year salary. If he doesn't make the team out of camp the damage will be negligible.

Scout Inc's write up on him makes him seem like really good fit for the Pats' defense:

Quote:
Gregory is a slightly undersized safety with average speed and adequate quickness, agility and athleticism. He has a great feel for the game. He often starts the season as a backup but ends up starting his share of games. He shows great route recognition and a good ability to read the quarterback's eyes from off coverage and will show decent range over the top. He is not timid about inserting himself on run defense and is a sure tackler but is not big or powerful enough to be a physical force near the line. He brings a big motor and a lot of enthusiasm.

Its a little early to give up on the season just yet. I expect the Pats to draft a starting safety in the first or second round to start next to Chung. I also think you will see another safety added either during F/A or during the cut down period to provide competition for Diggs, Slater, McCourty, Gregory & maybe Sterling Moore at the safety spots.

Chargers fans aren't too happy with their loss........so I guess we should be very pleased.......after all he was their best safety for quiet some time

Special teamer and dime/7th DB.

Pats pay well for middle/bottom of the roster types.

Well it's clear that they are targeting mostly defense in free agency and they should.
