You make a poor argument based on the available data. Remove the KC game and over the last 6 games -- a 6 game snapshot is a fair sample -- the Patriot defense is averaging just about 20 PPG (6 games/121 points allowed). That puts them where? Huh, that would put them right around a ranking of #10.
But I agree a single snapshot can be misleading. You are averaging 100% bad posting in your last 1 post but that could be misleading. Listen, sorry for the jab but you are being too hysterical over a stat that is unarguably the most important stat. However, if you are ultimately trying to say you are concerned about the Patriot defense, there are few objective fans who would disagree. Fortunately there is some evidence that improvement is occurring. Exactly what is wrong with taking that evidence and looking at it optimistically?
he is what he is.

In all seriousness, you're absolutely right. A perennial contender in the NFL is a coach and coaching staff that takes the pieces of his team and places them in an optimum position to win. The Patriots over the BB years have routinely beaten teams that had more talent. However, this year, if they make a serious run at the SB, will be the crowned jewel of BB's coaching performance.
I still have a hard time with the equation that equals a serious championship run -- with this secondary -- but it will be supremely grand if it does happen.
Arrington is playing well and the combination of Carter and Anderson are creating somewhat of a consistent pass rush (in obvious passing situations where Anderson can be inserted, of course). This defense needs McCourty to get healthy and keep improving. The combo of McCourty and Arrington healthy plus a pass rush and, as has been said, great coaching would really go a long way to improving the defense over what it was at the beginning of the season. Right now, the Pats are in a golden position. They sit at the top of the AFC with the softest part of their schedule within shooting distance after the Eagles game with a chance to get their starters healthy and experienced for the playoffs.
Unsurprisingly, given the way the schedule has been laid out, we are repeating the same patterns as last year. The defense sucks but, after being exposed for the lousy defense that it is, it faces crap competition and competition that is struggling when it meets the Patriots, and people begin to overrate the defense.
Hopefully, the end of the pattern is not repeated. Hell, for that matter, hopefully the end of the pattern isn't repeated with the offense, either.
I agree that the defense is still giving up way too many yards and T.O.P. and that the level of competition is going to mask that over the rest of the season, but I actually think that the soft schedule is a good thing. Gives some of the newcomers a chance to get used to the system even more and gives those injured in the LB corps and secondary a chance to get better without the Pats having to worry too much about losing the top seed and the AFC East.
Let's not jump the gun here, the competition will get easier so our stats will improve but there is lots of fixing to do.
The Patriots can only play the teams on their schedule, just like everybody else. There are some good offenses and special teams in the coming weeks, especially the one coming up.
While the Philadelphia Eagles are in turmoil, it is not unlikely they will score points in a hurry against the Patriots and freak us all out. The Eagles may have gotten better with Vince Young under center with all those weapons.
The Eagles average 24 points per game and it would be an accomplishment for the Patriots with Julian Edelman at CB and Ross Ventrone at Safety to hold them to 24 at Philadelphia.
