Default Are you ashamed of 18-1?

It's a weird phenomenon.

Yesterday I was giving a friend a hard time about Auburn-Alabama (he's a huge Auburn fan, I root for Saban) and he said if I keep it up he's going to buy an 18-1 shirt to irritate me.

I was on a Browns' board and a Pats fan (not me) posted something and a Browns' fan replied : 18-1.

Now, don't get me wrong, I would have killed for 19-0 or 18-1 with the 1 not being the last game. But like I told my Auburn friend, there's a lot worse that you can go through as an NFL fan (on the field, forget the stupid camera) than what we saw last year. The first 16-0 regular season ever. A Super Bowl appearance. It still grinds at me that we lost but last year was still a badge of honor for the Patriots and their fans, not a black mark of embarrassment.

Ashamed? No. Disappointed? Yes.

I think the Patriots accomplished more than any other team last year other than the Giants. I never got the whole 18-1 thing that Patriots haters try to spin it as if we went 1-15 like the Dolphins. And I have seen Dolphin fans use the 18-1 thing against the Patriots on other boards.

What the Pats did last year was impressive eventhough they did choke it at the end. Pats fans shouldn't be ashamed of it. Pats haters who use it as a negative are just morons.

It was weird for me to see a Browns fan say that - his team has never even been to the SB - and hasn't won an NFL championship since 1964 - he would kill to go to the SB and lose - never mind going 18-1.

It is weird, but the Super Bowl loser almost every year gets made fun by fans of teams that don't even make the playoffs. As if losing (or choking) in the Super Bowl is worse than going 7-9 and finishing third in their division.

Look at the 90s Buffalo Bills, they were a national joke for years. Yet, most of the fans of other teams in the league would have killed for their team to go to 4 straight Super Bowls even if they lost them all.

First 16-0 regular season in NFL history.

Less than 3 minutes from the first 19-0 record in NFL history, losing only because of one of the all-time 'fluke' plays.

What's there to be ashamed of?

Anyone who would be "ashamed" of 18-1 needs to have their head examined. It suggests that they'd otherwise feel better about 17-2, or 14-5. It's all about winning, baby -- anytime, anywhere.

I totally agree. Winning 18 straight games in a season and having a perfect regular season is incredible. I don't get the 18-1 thing either. People think they're being really clever and stickin it to Pats fans. IMO, people generally use it when they don't have a legit argument or know anything about football. I think its hilarious when 99% of the time its coming from fans of teams who either didn't make the playoffs or didn't get to the SB. I have a semi-friend who is a Jets fan and he gave me this for about a week straight after the SB. I found this amazing considering the Jets haven't won 18 games in the last 2 seasons combined.

Agreed - also with Deus Irae - but opposing fans seem to think we should be ashamed of it. It's REALLY weird.

Disappointed that they couldn't step up for the BIGGEST game and win. As fans we have to live with all the BS of the choke and the cheat! It is more like a feeling of missed opportunity.IMO for the season to be legit they needed to win the Super Bowl. Now in my mind it will forever carry an asterick. Just like when the Sox beat the Yanks in 2004. If they didn't win the WS it just wouldn't have felt the same. The WS win legitimized the Yankee victory. Losing the SB IMO dampens the 16-0 as they couldn't finish the task.
