Interesting. Seeing as how there is slim pickins on the FA market, hopefully we can use some of the cap space to extend Mankins/Wilfork.

More on Moss deal

Here are some more details on Randy Moss's contract with the Patriots:

Base salaries:
2008: $1.9 million
2009: $6.4 million
2010: $6.4 million

Salary cap charges:
2008: $6 million
2009: $10.5 million
2010: $10.5 million
Not bad, IMO.

What did you expect the cap numbers to be on a $9M per deal? LOL

It means the deal isn't backloaded so they expect him to play for 3 years. The low salary isn't as low as they could have made it this year considering he gets/already got a check for $12M. So $13.9M of his guaranteed money will have been paid this year, and another $1.1M of his salary in the future is guaranteed. His $8M dead cap in 2009 makes it likely he sees year two or $20.4M. And his cap savings of $6.5M in salary given 2010 #1 replacement cost pretty much means he sees year three unless he falls off a production cliff (like a Harrison injury season) in year 2.

But with the cap going up plus a potential UNCAPPED year coming up, Moss's cap hit isn't bad at all.

And if disaster does happen, it costs us 4 million dead money to walk away in '10, if I have this right, and there's no other prorated portion besides the signing bonus. Obviously if he's playing well, nobody's walkin' away from NOTHIN... but a meltdown in 09 could still be dealt with. In fact, all the incentives are for Randy to pitch a fit in 08 if he's going to pitch one

Are you guessing that the Patriots guaranteed his 2008 salary or was that reported somewhere??

Just guessing. He has $3M guaranteed beyond his signing bonus. I realize it could just as easily be later guaranteed salary.
