If the Patriots are going to do something on Colvin, it should be this week. It doesn't have to be but it most likely will.


I think that they will try to reach a cap friendly extension with him but if they can't, they will release him. I suppose they could wait on it to see if they really need the space further in the FA period. But, more than likely they will do something this Thurs.

Or, maybe thy think they can live with the $7.6 cap hit for him. I don't think so, but stranger things have happened.

They MUST work out something with him.
They need him this year and tehre is no one comparable available as a free agent

I will be quite surprised if it is not option 3. They signed him as a premier free agent, FAs cost money and $7.6 is not a whole lot for someone who can rush the QB.

They've got to reach an extension with him. I'll be very ticked if they get rid of Colvin. Honestly, i don't know how any one can make the argument as to why he should leave just makes no sense what so ever.

Why? Unless they have an immediate need for cap space, and it doesn't appear they will what with Stallworth and Washington's options not being picked up. You have to be under the cap on the first day of FA, and after that you can be as over as you want until the season opens - at which time if you are over the league will void contracts last to first until they get you under.

Cutting a veteran OLB who is scheduled to earn $5.5M in new money makes no sense. Extending that guy at age 31 makes a whole lot of sense considering he's played very well the last couple of seasons and his foot injury is apparently not a concern heading into camp. Cutting him at the open of FA would be stupid, frankly. They can leverage him somewhat later on if need be, but to cut him at the apex of the money grab

He didn't cost that much as a 26 year old FA. His signing bonus was $6M, and the only reason he has the cap hit in 2008 is because they restructured his hits after he was injured to ease the cap as he worked back by dumping $1.5M into his final season. They could have cut him easily at any point and yet they retained him even when he could barely contribute, which tells me they think he's well worth that relatively inexpensive investment when healthy. He's got at least another three years of solid production in him. Give him around $7-8M in signing bonus (most of which would be in exchange for his 2008 salary thereby guaranteeing it and getting it to his investment banker 6-10 months earlier) and 3 more years with $2-4M in salary and you have a $4M OLB for 2008 and 2009 and a $5-6M OLB for 2010 and 2011 with a dead cap of <$2M if he's not worth $6M in 2011 at the end of a 4 year $20M extension (when you include incentives which could be NLTBE following an IR stint to make it sound better).

Considering another team (ahem) just paid in the $10M APY range for a pass-rushing end whose main claim to fame is spinning in a circle real fast, looks like a pretty mutually sensible restructure to me

You definitely dont do it until you need the money. Use what you got on FA and use his savings and others on the draft.

Hopefully you get the restructure to save the money but you will know better in april wether you really have to cut him or if you could carry his money.

Lets say you cut him to save the money but than you cant spend all the money because of lack of talent on the market. You may have been able to carry his salary.

Exactly! And even if they cannot agree to an extension with Colvin and the Pats brass project that they'll need cap relief, both scenarios that I find implausible as of now, they can just as easily penny-pinch by cutting someone like Kyle Brady, picking up a Jag blocking TE or even drafting a lower round TE by tapping into the BB coaching tree resource.

I've been reading that Colvin's a cut casualty for the better part of an entire year on this board. Never understood it then and don't understand it now. You don't cut a guy like Colvin and in the worst case scenario, you live with his cap numbers just as you did during Ty Law's last two years here.
