Default Rookie guarantees and why Solder isn't signed yet

Rookie Revenge: full guarantees | National Football Post

Interesting article on why Solder isn't signed.

Basically, the Bucs guaranteed the entire 4-year contract of the 20th player, Adrian Clayborn. Every player ahead now wants all 4 years guaranteed as well. Kerrigan at 16 also has his deal guaranteed, so the 3 players in-between (including Solder) want the same.

Looks like he won't be getting to camp any time soon. If the 3 teams cave and fully guarantee their contracts it will set the precedent for the remaining duration of the CBA. Well done Bucs!

Matt Light is the starter at LT. Not a concern for mine.

Of course as a rookie on the Patriots, that's just what I want to start my career, to get on BB's ***** list.

Do you have the feeling that BB knew what he was doing re-signing Matt?

Hate to see the rookie miss all of camp tho......He''ll end up having a red shirted year........

Would you really sacrifice a spell on this team this year for a fourth guaranteed year, would be crazy in my mind.

Agents have been scrambling for an edge under the new CBA. Some of the newer GM's have given them one or two. A couple of teams also skimmed money off the backend draft allotments to max out their top tier guys. All of which will make for delayed signings again next season despite the streamlined new system. Solder changed agents several weeks ago, I believe to Lights agent. Will be interesting to see what 18 and 19 got guaranteed. One of them is Castonozo, and his deal just got done after Polian went public that there was no way he was guaranteeing 4 years for a rookie (who needs to be Manning's starting blindside protector out of the gate since they lost Charlie Johnson to Minnesota in FA and Ugoh was a bust).

Bad enough these kids all missed an offseason due to the lockout. Agents are never in it for the long haul. Three years in teams will be deciding on whether or not to exercise the 5th year guaranteed option on these kids for the average of the top 20 or so players at their position. I wonder how many from this class will be in position to warrant that after disappointing rookie season performances.

Considering the amount of money the team threw at Light, the amount (risk adjusted) by which they differ from Solder seems small by comparison.

Holding out, particularly in this condensed season, is not a good thing for a left tackle. Solder will be far behind the rest of the crew, and as good as he looks.. he does not know the playbook or the NFL.

All the more reason to have your entire contract guaranteed.
