"Two sources with ties to Vilma said the 2004 first-round pick has permission to shop his services to 30 of the league's teams, but not the Patriots."
Not that anything would ever be done about this, but shouldn't the league have a rule against that type of agreement? I would think the NFLPA would be pissed.
And how does that help you get best value if you are the Jets? I guess it's just another example of that organization being concerned with crap that doesn't mean anything instead of improving their team.

Damn, I was hoping the Pats could screw up the Jets ability to get the best value for Vilma by offering him a contract and a second round pick trade compensation potentially stopping Vilma from looking for trade partners. Then Vilma could file a grievance with the league like Deion Branch did with the Pats. I think this is exactly why the Jets said Vilma couldn't talk to the Pats.
The Pats know that the Jets would never trade Vilma to them, but they could definitely offer a contract no one would match to make it impossible for the Jets to trade Vilma.

I don't understand what actually happened with Branch. I know the Patriots claim they never gave Branch permission to talk with the Jets. Whatever the NFL ruled internally, it seems to me that the Patriots right to grant permission was not respected. If the Patriots can apply the same standard, they should at least pass word on to Vilma's people that they are willing to offer a decent package.
I doubt the Jets will be able to prevent that, given the history.

I believe Branch was given permission to seek out a trade partner (no restrictions) but WASN'T given permission to talk about contract terms with anybody. A perfectly legit set of conditions since he was still under contract with the Pats. The complaint was that Branch discussed contract terms with the Jets...the obvious intent being to drive a wedge between the Pats and Branch on a long-term deal.
While difficult to prove without a smoking gun, it would have been an easy investigation if the league really wanted to find these illegal discussions. As with the Milloy/Redskins situation, the league wants nothing to do with this. Unless you have hard evidence (a tape or multiple independent witnesses willing to talk), the league will bury any complaint about illegal contact.

I thought it was the Pats never gave restrictions, but they also never said they would take any offer that came their way or that Branch could negotiate compensation for the Patriots. The Pats stance was that the Jets weren't offering enough for them to trade Branch and that the second round pick (supposive compensation offered by the Jets for Branch) wasn't what they would want nor Branch had the right to negotiate that.
Basically what the Jets did was offer Branch the best contract, but lowballed the Pats in compensation. The Pats refused to trade Branch and Branch filed a grievance stating he held up his end of the agreement and the Pats had to hold up theirs and trade him. The Pats claimed they couldn't be forced to trade for Branch for below value.
INDIANAPOLIS - Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma is on the trading block, but the linebacker-needy Patriots shouldn't get their hopes up.
Two sources with ties to Vilma said the 2004 first-round pick has permission to shop his services to 30 of the league's teams, but not the Patriots.
While a high-ranking Jets official said the team would trade within the division if the value was right, even if it meant dealing with its bitter rival in New England, the sources close to Vilma contended otherwise.
Vilma's agent, Mitch Frankel, could not be reached.
That the Jets possibly would impose such a restriction on the Patriots could be viewed as a reflection of the continuing bad blood between the teams. Relations between the teams were icy even before the Patriots violated the NFL's videotaping procedures at the Jets' home stadium in the season opener. The ice only has grown thicker in subsequent months.
The New York Daily News reported Friday that the Jets have given Vilma permission to shop himself, noting that there are two layers to the process.
Vilma has one year remaining on his contract and is seeking a new deal, so the first layer would be striking a new contract with an interested team. If that happened, the team would negotiate compensation on a trade with the Jets.
Vilma is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2008 season, so the Jets have some motivation to facilitate a trade. He also underwent knee surgery in November, so there are some health questions and it remains unclear how well Vilma would fit in the Patriots' system.

I agree, hence the Jets wanting to get rid of him, which makes it all the more weird that they've made this stipulation (since they should rationally know that the Pats wouldn't want him anyways). Was this just a pure spite move?
