So, now we know that Mankins SB is going to be about $10 million. Now the Pats just need to work out a long term deal with him that locks him up for the next 5 years at a reasonable rate..

Wow, I had missed that proctology office comment when I heard about the decision earlier. Playful sense of humor or foreshadowing of things to come?

I mentioned this in another thread but I think it's worth repeating: unlike players in the final year of their contracts, there is a rather limited window of time to negotiate with and sign franchised players - which has been greatly reduced because of the lockout. The deadline for the Pats to sign Mankins to a new deal is September 20th. After that they have to wait until the end of the NFL year and either franchise him again (highly doubtful), try to sign him to a new contract then, or watch him leave for another team.

Thanks for the information. It also gives me a better perspective on why the Colts are getting jittery over doing a deal with Peyton.

Yep, in the past NFL teams had well over six months to work out a deal with a player once they placed the franchise tag on him. Now this year, thanks to the lockout they have only a little more than six weeks to do that - and they can't really get started on that until after they work out contracts for all the other veteran free agents, undrafted free agents, and rookie draft picks, narrowing the window of time to negotiate and work out a deal even further.

Going back to Mankins, another thing to consider is that the Patriots are one of the few teams in which the Head Coach doubles as the GM. Belichick is going to have to lean on Caserio and Floyd quite a bit because unlike other GMs he needs to be down on the practice field for training camp.

You guys sure are optimistic. The patriot way is the franchise and trade... not negotiate. =)
