Future scholarships will be taken away, and possible games that have already been played will be forfeited (at worst).

What else can be done? Considering that Tressel resigned under the scrutiny, and Pryor also left. The NCAA doesn't have to do much else, considering they already lost their star coach, and star QB...for good.

In other words, OSU already made the worst-case scenario a reality...it can't get much worse, and since the majority of the sanctions were about those 2 people, their work will be somewhat easy to figure out. In the harshest punishment possible, they may not allow them to go to a major bowl for a yr or two, but since they are the winningest college football program in the last 15 years, it's still a pretty damn good job for the future (from Vrabel's perspective)

The program isn't really entering a tailspin, Triumph. That would be the exact same as someone saying that we were entering a tailspin when Spygate happened.

The program (mainly the head coach) was under major scrutiny for not handling a situation (that was mainly Pryor's doing) in the correct manner. He also lied to the NCAA of any knowledge, when emails have proven that he knew beforehand, and tried to sweep it under the rug. Both of those guys are gone now, and that's what everyone wanted. That's what all of the big news was about, Pryor and Tressel.

When you have 3th and 4th stringers that would be starters on a lot of other programs, and you are one of the winningest programs in the NCAA (actually THE winningest over the past 15 yrs), taking on a coaching job there has to be a good thing.

The current coaches don't have anything to do with that controversy. Ohio State will play at a high level still, even if they only go 8-4 or so average--over the next 5 yrs.

It's a great move for Vrabel to get his foot in the door there, as he has the capacity to move up to DC in a few yrs, and he could possibly even be the future head coach of one of the biggest football programs in the country.

In other words, even if they went 0-11 for the next 5 yrs, it'd still be a great move that any coach in their right mind would jump on. The overall strength of the program, the history of the program, the current high-status etc will not change because of one controversy.

It's possible that they may not be able to play in a "major" bowl for the next year or two (worst case), and probable that they forfeit some past games and have scholarship sanctions. The NCAA could've possibly suspended Tressel and Pryor--maybe even permanently. That's what they pretty much wanted, for those 2 guys to be punished. The program itself will obviously be punished, but nowhere near the extent of the magnitude of losing a great head coach in Tressel. He did the right thing for the university by resigning.

Seeing as he as zero coaching experience this can only be a positive. If they suck people can always blame these issues and Vrabel still gets experience.

His alternatives would have been the NFL coaching programs or a smaller college. He is lucky his college was willing to do this.

Prolly not bad PR for them which they definitely need right.

Vrabel always wanted to coach at OSU. If this is his dream, how is it a bad career move. Besides, the current coaching staff will get a free pass for a few years because Tressell and Pryor will get blamed for everything.

There is no reason not to believe that the program could turn itself around in a few years. Even if it doesn't, as pointed out, this is Vrabel's first coaching gig and he could always end up moving onto a better program in the future or move onto the NFL level. His friend, Luke Fickell, might be making a bad choice since he is moving up to the head coaching level and could ruin his chances of ever being a successful head coach taking the job, but it is a no lose situation for an entry-level coach. At that level, any experience is good experience.

Multiple reports now seem to be confirming that Vrabel will retire from the NFL on Monday and join the staff at OSU. Florio is opining that he should have his name added to the listed plaintiff's in the lawsuit thereby negating the need to deal with the seperate suit filed by Eller's group in any settlement talks.

Given his reputation as a veterans veteran it will be interesting to see how Vrabel transitions to coaching a group of youngsters including many whose values seem to have changed in the decade and a half since he last toiled at The Ohio State. Sounds like in the wake of the recent Tressel/Pryor scandal the NCAA and the University have become aware of a potential systemic dysfunction dating back several seasons for which further penalties may ensue. That may have even spurred the need to add a potential high profile NFL/NFLPA battle tested sheriff to the rookie coaching mix.

Vrabel was frequently reported to do his off-season workouts at Ohio State. He probably has a pretty good idea of what current OSU players are like.
