Go click on sounds of the game at the NFL network. Last week's AFCCG contained a few references by players to things that were said in the media.
Incentive? Like playing in the Super Bowl isn't incentive enough?

Don't talk to me. I'm not a Patriot or a Charger. I don't play professional football. It's the players who put these chips on their shoulders.

But, if I were you, I wouldn't advise people like Rodney or Shawne Merriman on the proper way to get themselves up for games.

If they want to take offense and feel "disrespected," who am I to tel them otherwise?

Better players with better coaches will win almost all the time, regardless of how bad a player feels "disrespected." Feeling "disrespected" is not going to make them run faster, hit harder or make catches, throws or tackles that they normally wouldn't make. If anything it may hurt them into making stupid decisions.

Do you actually believe the words of third-string and now-unemployed WR Freddy Mitchell carried us to a Super Bowl victory over the Eagles?

I remember being really embarrassed when the Pats lost to the Bears by the largest margin in SB history at that point. Only years later when The Broncos lost by more could I feel better. Based on the arrogance and ignorance of Giant fans (been watching YES?WFAN all afternoon) I hope their "confidence" is rewarded with a major, massive loss in SB 42.

The reason you don't hear Patriots making comments like this is that they are LIVING the mentality that BB preaches, which is that this is going to be a very difficult team. BB goes out of his way to convince his team that the opponent is better than they might think. These type of comments are trying to convince himself that his own team is better, or the opponent is overrated.

How does that materialize as an effect on the game?
Very simple. PREPARATION. If you are preparing that you have a very tough opponent, and must play 60 minutes and play as well as you can to win, you prepare well. If, during your preparation, you are overly confident, you do not prepare as well.

As far as proof, Belichick is almost certainly the winningest coach in big games in NFL history. If his approach is to overestimate the opponent, and that is the result, I'd have to conclude that overestimating yourself and/or underestimating the opponent will detract from your big game performance.
Maybe so, Andy, but I think you will agree that the kid could have gotten a lot more mileage out of something like, "We look forward to this game with the Patriots. We almost got them last time, and we're feeling confident we have a real good chance in this game."

Compare and contrast with, "We're GLAD we're playing the Patriots!", which sounds at once like unbridled arrogance by a young 'un and a smarmy subliminal message to the Patriots that says, "You guys should consider yourselves lucky to even be playing us."

That's how it comes off, intentionally or not.

I don't know how anyone can read his comments as 'we're glad, because the Patriots are so easy." It's clearly, "we're glad, because it's the ultimate challenge; we wanted a rematch w/ the best team in the league..."

Maybe because some people can read better than you?

He said, "I'm glad we drew the Patriots, we match up well with them."

Everyone in trying to minimize this quote is putting words in this guy's mouth. He never said, I want revenge, or I want the ultimate challenge.

He said, "I'm glad we drew them [rather than other teams] because we match up well against them."

That's the quote.

As for using disrespect to get up for games, yes, I do believe it's a big reason why the Patriots are 16-0. They might have been 14-2 or 15-1 otherwise.

Adrenaline gets pumping. You can be fast, you can be strong, but if you don't have adrenaline, out of anger, that may effect your performance negatively.

I'm really surprised I have to explain this to Patriots fans.

I think Boss is a much, much better player than Shockey. The Giants hold training camp around my house and I saw alot of Boss.

Of course, everybody is glad to play against Pats because they will say that Pats is the greatest football team after their team lost.

What is a great and acceptable excuse.!
