Default Why do players like and want to play for Sexy Rexy?

I read a recent poll that like 40+ % rookies want to play for Rex and the Jets.

That's a mind boggling number.I personally don't get it. As a rookie my own personal choice would easily be BB considering his history of success, professionalism and no nonsense approach. What better way to evolve as a player than under his tutoring?

Rex and Jets have had a great run these 2 years but BB has been doing it for a decade...Do players just want the paycheck and be in the kind of environment the Jets have about business? Instead of being in a franchise that is considered the model for success in the NFL?

EDIT: Damn, wrong forum. Can this be moved to the main one?

That number would have been a lot lower, had they not made it to the AFCCG the past 2 yrs (IMO). If NE wins that game, that percentage is at least 10% lower.

Obviously it will either go one way or the other, depending on whether they take the next step, or fade back into their known oblivion.

Right now, it seems as if they are 'THE' team to want to play for due to their coach's player friendly style, his 'looseness,' and their recent 'success.' All it will take it one 10-6 yr and a missed playoff opportunity, or even a one/done postseason performance.

In other words, they're still one of the flavors of the month. I suppose since they beat us with a good gameplan, they deserve it more than I would like to admit. Had they not won that game, there wouldn't be the 'back/back AFCCG' talk.

Well, virtually 100% of the subjects being polled here are "kids" - 20-23 yrs old aggressive males, many of whom may yet have some maturity issues []. Ryan projects an image of a bada$$, uncle who likes to joke around a lot and keeps things loose and undisciplined and just "lets his guys play" without subjecting them to hours of studying a complex scheme. And, he's been winning (lately). And the team is in NYC ("Open All Night!").

So, maybe it's a little surprising that ONLY 40% voted for him?

Kids, always looking for the excitement when you let them out of the barrel.

When you were a young kid. Straight out of college. Do you think you would have preferred going straight into the Marine Corps, or working for that fun internet startup that may be bankrupt in a year, but let employees ride skateboards in the hallways and come and go whenever they pleased? Especially if you were a bit on the immature, thuggish or primadonna side?

Of the two, joining the Marines would probably be better choice for the long term prospects of building character and turning you into a responsible man. But I venture a guess most would pick the more "fun" option.

That kind of mindset is a quick way to become a bust or drop out of the league. The NFL is as cutthroat as any business and if your first choice would be to to go somewhere where it might be more enjoyable just for the sake of it is a bad sign imo.

My guess is HBO has the most to do with it.

I agree with you. But I think my post explains why some rookies would prefer the Jets.

Seems my 2 favorite coaches are personality deficient: Belichick and Jim Calhoun. They did a similar survey in basketball of high school and college kids, and the number of kids who wanted to play for Calhoun was astoundingly low because they knew he would run them all day, preach fundamentals, curse them out in public and yank them from the game for mistakes. You can dispute his methods but he has put more player into the NBA than any other coach.

With coaches like this, players tend to self-select, and the teams are better for it. The players who elect to play for such coaches are typically hard-arses themselves who are built to withstand the pressure of playing for these guys.
