Re: 08 free agents
I agree that these discussions will have relevance only after the Super Bowl. I would note that I don't think there are nay player who are "playing for the ring" and will retire if they get the ring, and play on if not.
The first phase of free agency will be after the Super Bowl and before free agency officially starts. It is in this time frame that we be negotiating with our own players. There are a couple of options to decide upon (Washington and Stallworth) and also we need to know who intends to retire. It is also the time to extend contracts if players are willing (Colvin).
This prepares us for the next phase, the first week of free agency. It is unlikely that we will be as active as last time. However, we have learned that make deals early really helps the rest of the offseason. I look for one or two players in that week, plus a couple of re-signings.
I ignore all free agent list from other teams until at least the first week of free agency. After all, most will re-sign with their teams.
We will also see if anyone makes a huge error is designating their RFA's. There are still teams like Miami able to make such errors, but they are rare.
