Default TMQ on Gaffney

I suppose this is a minor nit to pick, but Gregg Easterbrook wrote on the Brady to Moss to Brady to Gaffney play:

Quote:
Mr. Guarantee, safety Anthony Smith, let Gaffney go deep. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was telling the safeties of my county-league, middle school team: When a receiver is sprinting purposefully deep on a play that looks like a run, it means he knows something you don't know. Anytime a receiver is sprinting at full speed in this situation, assume a trick play!

My recollection from the replays is that Gaffney slowed up midway through his route in order to sell the play. Is my recollection correct? I thought I'd ask some people who probably pay more attention to these things than I do.

If Gaffney was running straight out full speed from the snap he would have been out by Route 1 by the time the ball came down. I was hoping that NFL replay would have a camera isolated on what he did that play but I haven't watched it yet.

Not only did the ball cross the field twice, but Brady double pumped before finally launching it.

Your recollection is correct. Gaff sold it really well. I think Brady even remarked on it afterwards. Gaff deserves an Academy Award. As usual Easterbrook deserves a kick in the ass.

Not surprising Easterbrook is "wrong on the facts, wrong on the law."

Facts - Gaffney slowed up and then once he was almost even he sped up
Law - If you assume a trick play any time the WR sprints, you take your safety out of stopping the running game AND from any defense of the underneath routes. You'll guarantee that if the WR gets past the LB its an easy first down at the least.

Easterbrook's grasp of X and Os is laughable.

You are right.

And this is not the first time this idiot did this.

Back in 2004, there was a play against the KC Cheifs where Trent Green throws an int, a bad one into double coverage. What was funny was on that play Gonzales was the intended reciever and complained about int when replays clearly showed he was the one who initiated contact.

Anyway, TMQ idiot says, "On a perfectly thrown ball by Green to Gonzales, Harrison blatently interfered and got the pick".

The problems were
1. The ball was no where near the receiver.
2. Gonzales intitiated contact.
3. The contact was with Phifer, Harrison never touched Gonzales.

You would have thought he didn't actually see the play.

I really, no exageration, absolutely believe this idiot just makes stuff up.

He does.

He honestly just lives in his alternate reality, and this was long before spy gate.
