Default Re: Explaining that illegal formation penalty

Forgot to comment on this in other threads so thanks for the screen cap and explanation. The rule in question is that you need to have 7 players on the LOS and the 2 on either end are eligible receivers. In this case, there were only 6 and Brown was on the end of the line without reporting as eligible (because of his jersey number).

The reason why this was confusing during the broadcast was that Gruden (who had a rough night) was dumping on Brown for making such a rookie mistake...even though it was actually the fault of one of the receivers.

Thank you!! That was bugging the CRAP out'f me. I don't get the 22, so I couldn't for the LIFE of me figure out what that nonsense was about.

1 ~ Excellent Point. I like Coach Gruden a great deal, and always enjoy his Games, but that was a pretty obnoxious Fail, there: He's supposed to enlighten and inform us ~ or at least have the Integrity to admit when he doesn't know, either ~ not dump on a guy for a Penalty he didn't commit.

2 ~ Odd that the Left Tackle would get called on that. Sort of like a QuarterBack getting gigged for an Interception on a Ball that bounces out'f the intended Receiver's hands. That's a problem with the Rules, if the Referees aren't allowed to make a Judgement Call. I expect that must be the case, because we've seen this get called, before, and it's always on the Tackle, if I recall correctly. And it's a problem with the Referees, if they are allowed to make a Judgment Call, because it was clearly the Flanker's fault there, for...being a Flanker!!

On an only slightly related note...

I love Nate "Universal" Solder, but if had had my way, and if we'd traded Randy Moss to the highest bidder immediately after that fantastic 2007 Season of his ~ Franchise & Trade, like Matt Cassell ~ and if we'd landed consecutive 1st Rounders from the RedSkins for the most talented Wide Receiver of the ages after his ridiculous 98/1493/23 TD Campaign ~ as I love to imagine we would've!! ~ then Duane Brown never would've been called for that Penalty.

He would've been on our SideLine.

Duane Brown is an amazing fusion of Power and sweet, sweet Athleticism ~ my notion of a dream Left Tackle ~ and I would've been all over that kid at #21 in 2008...before scooping up Brian Orakpo with #13 in 2009!!

My apologies for this Indulgence, Gents...It's a pet RetroPhantasy of mine, like not trading Sparky Lyle to the @#$%ing KnickerBockers in 1972 for Danny @#$%ing CATER!!

To be fair, though, it's a variant of what's sometimes called "leading bias": because the ref only pointed out the LT, Gruden fell into the trap of trying to figure out what the LT did wrong.

It would have been much better if the ref had said "no eligible receiver on the left end of the line."

Default Uncatchable Ball PI Calls

Like most of you here, I watch a lot of NFL football. I can't recall once this season seeing a PI call waived due to a pass being ruled uncatchable. Does anyone know if that rule is still on the books?

Yes it's still on the books...but from what I understand, alot of the QB's have told the officials that the times that the ball is thrown away is because of the penalty and the receiver not being able to get open ......but ya know..if they are calling it liberally on both teams..it's ok with me......I'll ask Ed Hoculi this weekend his opinion when I see him pregame

One explanation I heard is that officials are trained to watch the players, not the ball.

So how the heck do you practice all week, script the first bunch of plays, and then get the formation wrong on the very first one??

I think they have the capability of watching both and making a decision on that...lol...it's not that tough of a call. I'm wondering how many more "intentional grounding" calls have been made this year...especially down in the endzone area when the QB's throw the ball away...and how many more PI's are called in the endzone in the same scenario. Just overthrow it in the EZ near a receiver and see if they can draw a flag!!
