Is this Belichick's best coaching job ever? - Extra Points - Boston.com

As far as football opinions go I'm not much of a fan of Bob Ryan, and am definitely not a fan of Dan Shaughnessy, but the two actually have a somewhat decent discussion on the topic of whether or not this year has been Belichick's best coaching job ever to this point.

I really hope Belichick coaches for at least another 5 years. Please Bill, please.

Absolutely. Might be the best coaching job by anyone ever.

I'd still go with 2001. They were a more experienced group but still the talent level was very iffy aside from LB and CB. This team probably has more talent at almost every other position

Every year he does a great coaching job. There is no one better every week of every year.

It's debatable that every year he does a great GM job and that is true for every GM.

Here's Shaughnessey's SI column on the subject, for those who need to stay audio-free at work (or just prefer reading):

There is an argument to be made that BB is the best coach of all time.

Over a decade, with personnel that has fluctuated wildly & the only constant being Tom Brady (and not even that one year), he has kept the Pats atop the division and contending for not just the playoffs most years, but also being legit SB contenders year after year.

And so much of it IS coaching. Guys go down at key positions, and he makes the backups & starters look almost interchangeable in the schemes he draws up. Beyond that, after all of this time, there are certain things he does - particularly in terms of mixing up the defense from half to half and week to week - that the rest of the league still hasn't quite figured out.

Guy's a genius, imo....
