If we look at this from an economic standpoint, and we consider some of the games televised on MNF so far this season, the conclusion is that they'll do anything to pump up the interest, and they're hoping this game turns out to be a contest like the Eagles game on Sunday night. Some of the blowouts this season on MNF:
Tennessee 31 New Orleans 14
New England 34 Cincinnati 13
NYG 31 Atlanta 10
Indy 29 Jax 7
Pittsburgh 38 Baltimore 7
Seattle 24 San Fran 0
Denver 34 Tenn 20
Then add this to the Pittsburgh 3 Miami 0 game this week along with Washington 20 Philly 12 that leave national audiences checking their watches after the first half, they need to drum up interest. If New England dominates the first half and puts points on the board, considering Baltimore's anemic offense, they lose most of their viewers before halftime. Having Shula visit the booth provides some national interest. But this network knows that if the games are boring or one-sided, they lose their audience early with the exception of those loyal fans of the teams playing. Therefore, they must keep the zoo atmosphere to compete against a late hour and a boring game. Unfortunately, that's a fact of life with MNF and SNF for that matter. I don't like it, but that's what we've got this week with Jaworski's criticisms of Moss and the announcement of Shula's appearance.
