Hey, the Patriots are human!!
New England remains undefeated, but I think we can all agree to wait until February to crown NFL champions after the Patriots' performance tonight against the Eagles.

Give the Patriots credit for coming from behind to beat Philly, but that's the second time in three weeks New England had to rally in the fourth quarter. This proves that the Patriots, while undefeated, aren't perfect.

You can question whether Patrick Crayton should have said it, but his assessment of the Patriots' defense looked pretty much on the money tonight. Any defense that allows A.J. Feeley to pass for 345 yards has flaws.

Tom Brady was terrific again, and he continues to have the best QB season in NFL history. But the Patriots' inconsistent running game could bite them during the playoffs.

Should the Patriots be the favorites to win the Super Bowl? Of course. Are they sure things? Not even close. And let's wait until the game's over in Glendale before we debate the Patriots' place in history again.

Stakes raised
With the Patriots win over the Eagles, the Cowboys (or the Packers, for that matter) can become the first team to clinch a berth in the NFC playoffs with a win Thursday night. It would also assure Dallas back-to-back trips to the postseason for the first time this decade.

As for tonight's game, because I know some people asked, here's where the Eagles drew a blueprint: Offensively, you protect, and you can test a Patriots secondary; Defensively, you pressure and you force the Patriots to nickel-and-dime you; And you don't (that means you, A.J. Feeley) force things.

To me, it simply requires patience. It's difficult to pop big plays on the Patriots, and they'll pop big ones on you. But if you can hang with them blow for blow, and you have the patience to go on long drives without the big 30- or 40-yard gain (taking advantage of New England's "big" personnel in coverage on early downs), and you can get to the quarterback because you cover well enough not to get burned as a result (probably running more nickel defense than base), they are beatable.

The good news for the Cowboys? One crucial area, where you need to be good, is along the offensive line, which allows you to test the Patriots' pass defense. The Eagles (now that "Turnstile" Justice isn't playing anymore) are solid there. So are the Cowboys. The question will be whether the Cowboys secondary, once Anthony Henry gets healthy, can be as solid as the Eagle DBs were tonight.

And yes, we are getting ahead of ourselves here. But I'm just trying to answer what was asked of what could be a dream Super Bowl for the NFL. Think about this possibility: 18-0 Patriots vs. the 17-1 Cowboys, whose only loss came against the team they're playing that Sunday. It'd be something else.

All this means is that when the Pats play the Cowboys in the Superbowl (and I SINCERELY hope they do), you will have to give fewer points when you make your bet on the Pats.

My preference is to face Lord Favre's Packers so this team gets the chance to avenge our Super Bowl loss to him.
