Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson believe the Pats offense is essentially the same this year as it was during the 2004 season. He would know since he studied the Pats in preparation for the Super Bowl...

Quote:
Reminded of that conversation yesterday, after the Eagles' Thanksgiving morning practice at the NovaCare Complex, Johnson was asked whether his level of angst had risen this week, as he watched film of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady using all of his new toys to carve up teams week after week on their way to a 10-0 record.

"There's no question that they're playing at a higher level than a lot of people have seen," Johnson said after managing another laugh. "I don't have to go on about how good they are right now."

Interestingly, Johnson does not think the Patriots' offense is much different from the one Brady ran during a tightly contested game against the Eagles in the Super Bowl. He does believe it is better.

"Really, they're doing the same things they did," he said. "They've added a few wrinkles, but it's the same stuff. Brady knows the system and they've developed it, and they're playing with such high confidence right now."

Talent at WR. The passing game in the past relied on execution; WRs had to run good routes or make good adjustments in sync with Brady and he'd have to hit them in the perfect spot. The WRs in their own right weren't going to burn any CBs on a regular basis or draw double-teams regularly. Teams didn't fear the WRs, they feared Brady.

Now, they have Moss who requires defenses to give him a ton of attention. They have Stallworth who despite not making long catches like he did in Philly is still a longball threat and forces the D to keep safeties back. Then they have Welker who is a nightmare matchup in the slot. Now defenses fear Brady and Moss and have to worry about Welker and Stallworth.

In the past, the offense was the king of taking what the defense gave them, but still it was an offense that reacted to what the defense was doing. This year the offense does its thing and forces the defense to react.

Regards,
Chris

We've added some good talent. We have been healthy. Our aging LBs have a few more games left in them. A good defense helps the offense via field position and time of possession.

The main reason: Randy Moss.

Also, The O line is completely dominating to this point in the season in pass protection.

I don't think I have ever seen a QB be able to sit in the pocket, consistently, as much and as long as Brady has this year.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but NE has to be tops or close to the top in the league in Sacks Allowed.

It's something easy to take for granted, I know watching Manning get constantly pressured on several occaisions this year, I didn't appreciate it in years past as much as I do now.

If you give the type of protection he's gotten and you have Randy Moss, I don't care if have the 85 Bears or the Steel Curtain, it's unstoppable.

It all starts in the trenches.

If the Eagles think that this is the same offense as in 2004, they are in for a sad awakening. The WR's are better, the OL is better, and Brady is better. Even if the playbook were exactly the same, the offense is different. The quality of the WR's make a huge difference.

The combination of this talent allows for a receiver to be open on probably over 90% of all passing plays, with time to throw the ball, with a QB that is the best at finding a weakness in the defense and spotting the open guy.

Plus it doesn't hurt to be able to just say "when in doubt, chuck it up to MOSS" .
I agree the synergy between these receivers and TB makes the whole greater then the sum of their parts....Its like a "Perfect Storm" of talent and execution. The really scary part for other teams is they have not yet reached their maximum efficiency. As TB pointed out they have only been together for 10 games....The future is very bright indeed.

Well even if he was right, which is a stupid thought, they still would not stand a chance this Sunday because while in his mind we are the same they definitely are not. The only thing that kept them even close in that Super Bowl was a person called TO and gee he is no longer on their roster...Without the over the top playing of TO the Eagles would not have even been close in that game.

You can't really quantify what makes the offense so good. It's a combination of hard work, talent, good coaching, and team work ...... some things that all reference each other and don't easily pop out at you like plain talent alone.

A few teams out there have great talent on offense like the Bengals, but they can't achieve their potential because they're not functioning as a team. If Bill was the coach of the Bengals we'd have seen a championship in Cincy by now.
