So on a night when Colts quarterback Peyton Manning directly contributed to his team's two-point loss by serving up six picks to the Chargers, what was Peyton doing after kicker Adam Vinatieri missed a chip-shot field goal attempt that would have given Indy an improbable late lead?

True to form, Peyton blaming someone else.

"We shouldn't have called a time out," Manning could be seen saying -- twice -- to an unidentified teammate while seated on the bench.

His point was that the Colts shouldn't have called a time out before the missed field goal try. Coach Tony Dungy apparently wanted to argue with the refs regarding a false-start penalty called on tight end Ben Utecht, who clearly used a pre-snap shift in an obvious effort to get the Chargers to jump offsides.

Taking the time out left the Colts with only two opportunities to stop the clock when the Chargers got the ball back after the 29-yard attempt was pushed to the right -- and it gave the Colts not enough time to get back in position to win the game in the final seconds. (But there was enough time left for Peyton to throw one more interception.)

Said a league source to us on Monday morning, "Way to undermine your coaching staff by talking sh-t to your teammates."

Added the source, "This is classic Peyton Manning. Excuses, excuses excuses. Rolls his eyes when things aren't going his way. Gives teammates the Dan Marino treatment. And now he second guesses his coaches to teammates while the game is still being played. What about the six interceptions he threw?"

The source believes that Peyton exposes his true colors whenever he's in a tough situation. (And when we say "true colors" we're not talking about the purple mark on his oversized forehead that looked like a tattoo of the continent of Asia.)

"He just always thinks he's smarter and better than everyone," the source said. "But he tries to hide it with that 'aw, shucks', good old boy crap."

We agree. Though the situation won't catch the eye of the media like last year's "why in the f--k did you bring me here?" from Cowboys receiver T.O against the Eagles, Manning's comments can be just as divisive, because they can create confusion among the other players as to who is really running the show.

And if you don't think that statements like that have an impact on a team, look at the Ravens, who have imploded since linebacker Ray Lewis openly questions the play-calling of coach Brian Billick.

Yea, but imagine having Dungy for your coach. There are ramafications. I would think that Dungy and Manning actually do have quite a few differences. And, in the end, it is Payton who probably wins out.

I think that Payton is very driven. He certainly does get pissed at people for not doing their jobs. He is conceted. Got a big head. What ever. But I think he is a far better person than Dungy. Manning does not hide behind sanctimonious bs. He had a very bad game. Actually, he is not having as good a year.

I think that Florio is the worst kind of journalist also. He is just as bad as easterbrook.

I don't know. the fact is, the Chargers were very, very lucky to win that game even with all that crap. The Chargers are freakin' AWFUL. If there's anyone left over here who still fears them......don't. Just don't.

What's new. Remember a couple years ago, on 4th and short. Dungy trotted out the FG squad and Peyton waved them back off the field so HE could run the play.

You imagine Brady doing that kind of stupid *****. BB would call a timeout and stop the game. Waive Tommy over and them proceed to kick him in the nuts repeatedly on National TV until he learned his lesson. Seriously, who's in charge over there? Peyton a such a primadonna and Dungy is such a p*ssy.

I am know Peyton lover but irresponsible journalism can take any quote out of context and twist it to make their point. Peyton had a hellacious game inside the confines of an average year. I think he knows it and admitted as such.

Peyton followers cannot let go of the idea of Peyton as a superhero. For example see the Peyton as Beowolf comparison prior to last nights game. A Great QB in his prime takes setbacks, like loss of key receivers, and overcomes them to win anyway. Peyton follwers say-"how do you expect Peyton to win without his key receivers?" Many media members have invested too much butt smooching time to let this go and admit Peyton is having an off year.

Part of greatness is overcoming adversity.

Yep. That incident, which was a punt situation by the way, is why I will never respect Dungy as a coach.

What crock PFT can be. I thought you guys hated it, sure are a lot of people that like Florio when he's not talking about the Pats. Even if Peyton was saying they should have called a time on the bench as he claims, what's wrong with that? I don't think he was wrong about taking a time out. Either take a chance at getting the first or let the clock run down at kick the field goal. Everyone saw the results when they didn't. Not to say that AV would have hit the field goal from 5 yards closer, but it's more likely that he would have. If you agree with Florio, then I guess you feel that players should be mindless robots right? It's not like he said it to anyone outside of the orginization. Florio did forget to add that Peyton took full blame.
