Yeah, everyone else trailed the Herald on the "Spying on the Rams @ SB 36" story also.

Those aren't "small details" you mention in your post as what is now different about these reports. 3 year extension (reported by Mr. "I Like to write the Word I alot" in the Herald) versus the 4 year extension now being reported by ESPN is a material difference. So is the "deal could be in place within 24 hours" versus "could happen within the next week or two".

I'm afraid speed has never been the problem with the Boston Herald sports desk.

Yes, they are indeed "small details" because once that story broke the details are secondary to the story of it getting done. All the reporting after the fact about the terms is secondary to that big scoop.

It means Tom Brady can spend his entire career as a Patriot. There is real money while he is on top of his game. There is freedom to pay him realistic money later, if he is not injured. Guys like Montana had to leave their clubs the last year or two, because the end of contract dollars were phony, and completely disproportionate.

I look forward to Brady being a Patriot all the way to the HOF.

Mankin's allocated kitty is getting eaten up.
Montana's trade had nothing to do with $$$. It was essentially the Drew Bledsoe exit only he got to select his own landing spot. The 49ers were so shook they offered to name him the starter again so he'd stay and retire a 49er. He was having nothing of it. Bridge was burned to the ground.

Brady will only cost the same or more in another 4 years if he's still a franchise starter because the cap landscape will be different. Just look at Favre who is getting paid $16M plus incentives that could reach $20 in his freakin' dotage.

Might as well change the thread title to 4 years, $80M apparently. WOW!

It's a big contract. I'll love to watch the Colts try to beat that.

They're going to have to if they want to keep Manning happy. If Manning can't beat Brady in ring count, he has to make more money than him.

Is there any chance the Pats structure Brady's new contract in a way that they can sign Mankins to an extension or (more likely) Moss?

Nope, it will be as Borges hints x number of years at somewhere between $18-19M and the reason is the Krafts because of their position in the league as members of the finance committee will not cross the $20M per barrier first on the way to a new CBA necessitated by employee costs outstripping operating revenue. They will also employ the rolled over final season to lower the average farther as kind of an on principle approach. They are in a tough spot between wanting to do what is best for themselves and what is best for the league. Lucky for them I think Brady gets that, too...Brady will set the mark however temporarily for new money and average, but his deal won't represent a sea change (as say Peyton's did in 2004 or Asamougha's or Haynesworth's or some of the recent rookie or 2nd QB deals did) because those are the desperation driven deals that have really screwed up salary structures across the league. Maintaining the foundation of the league because it impacts the foundation and stability and value of his 1/32nd of it matters to Bob Kraft as much as maintaining his own team's edge because he's a smart businessman with a long term POV and not someone looking to achieve a short term goal at any cost and live with whatever consequences arise later.

Neither has any real impact on the other. They offered Mankins what they felt he was worth. They will offer Randy what they feel he is worth if they decide they in fact want to extend his time here.

Assuming there is a cap next year, Manning has a lot more leverage.

Manning's cap number is very high this year, almost $20M, and he would get 110% of that if he is franchised. That would make it much harder for the Colts to put together a team, because he would be taking so much room. They need to get him signed.

Brady's cap number is a little over $10M so he would get the tender amount for QBs, which would be somewhere in the area of $16M this year. Thus, the Pats could franchise him much easier. Granted, they don't want to do that and nobody knows how Brady would react, but it still means there is less leverage.
