PFT is reporting that the deal is not as big as it might appear. The real deal, if they are correct, seems more reasonable.

TILLMAN DEAL NOT QUITE AS BIG AS ADVERTISED by Michael David Smith

Yesterday it was widely reported that the Bears had signed cornerback Charles Tillman to a six-year, $41.5 million deal, with $18.5 million guaranteed.

But we're hearing that Tillman's contract isn't quite the bonanza it's been advertised as.

In reality, the Tillman deal is a five-year, $29 million extension. The extra money that's been reported comes from a phony final year with a base salary in the $8 million to $9 million range. It's extremely unlikely that he'll really get that much cash that year, at age 32. The contract also took $3 million of his 2007 base salary and converted it to a bonus, but that $3 million has been reported as new money.

The Pats offer may have been fair absent the franchise tag. Once they tagged him, there is no way they would ever realistically have expected him to take their offer.

He already had 8m guarenteed on the table for 1 year, 13 million guarenteed for any length of time more than 2 years was not going to get it done.

To me, the Tillman extension is all the more reason Samuel will sit out.

No he won't. He might be upset but he's not going to throw away $5M or so to sit out 10 games.

To the contrary, it emphasizes that he will need a good season in 2007 to get a big payday. The question about him now is whether 2006 is an aberration. He won't resolve that question by sitting out most of the season and then coming in as a nickleback for the next few games, where he'll have few chances at interceptions. Finally, around the 12th game, he'll be at RCB, and eventually at LCB. How do you build your stats that way?

At that rate, a second franchise tag (if the Pats even offer it) will look better than a free agency contract.

No, his payday comes if he plays and plays well.

I agree totally..he needs that BIG season again and sitting out will not help that at all, in fact I think it reduces it big time. The Tillman signing was reasonable and he played a few seasons with really solid play. AS only has the half season. He can do as he wishes, but if he sits out he shoots himself in the foot two ways.
