Default OT: Polamalu close to new deal with Steelers

Looks like Pittsburgh is going to lock him up long term.

I wish we could do that with our big time DBs.

Troy actually has been good for more than 1 year and i would pay him top 3-5 safety money. unlike Samuel..i wouldnt mind paying him but show us its more than luck

And whatever they pay him won't be as much as if he waited a year and entered free agency. So they know they're getting a decent deal on him. It's a lot like the Vasher situation where he was given an extension early. If they had only done that with Samuel...

Presuming of course we had any...

Polamalu is a perenial pro bowler. And one of the few the Steelers would be extending themselves for. They are one of the tightest organizations in the league. They've got more unhappy campers on average right now than any team. I think they feared Polamalu would leave after what could be a potential ugly transition season, not for the west coast but because he's still upset about Cowher bolting.

I know you are new here, but they tried. They offered him a deal last fall prior to several of his INTS with $7.5M in bonuses and likely a $4.5-5M average, but at the time he wanted $12M guaranteed and $6M per...

that i forgot completely about, but I didn't know those numbers. Nevertheless, it still would have been nice to see him signed before the season started. Even though it would have been impossible to foresee Samuel playing so well and give up what he was asking for.

What you don't seem to understand is it was impossible to sign him prior to last season because coming off a season in which the national media didn't know his name (he was just part of a no name lightly thought of secondary save Harrison) he already had delusions of grandeur, comparatively speaking. It takes two with fairly corresponding motivation to get these deals done. We got Koppen re-signed when Asante passed on the opportunity, because Koppen apparently wanted to be re-signed.

the difference between Polamalu and Asante is that Polamalu is worth breaking the bank for. I wouldn't hesitate to give him top money at his position.

Isn't R-whatever also a free agent at the end of the year? If so, signing Polamalu now is huge for Pittsburgh since they can't franchise both. I might advise him to not sign an extension, with the hope that Pitt is forced to franchise Ben and let Polamalu become a free agent. He would get a ton of money if he hit the market.

If you mean the Quarterburger, he's got 2 to go but wanted/expected an extension (for reasons that elude me...) this season. The Steelers have decided to wait and see on him until I guess he has a good season again under a HC not named Cowher.
