Default Question On Supplemental Draft Picks During Tragedy...

What is the rule on this one?

Will the Pats and the Broncos get picks for their players untimely passing(s)?

Just curious.

Not trying to be callous or cold hearted in the least, that is why I made up a different thread about it.

I haven't heard anything about the Broncos getting any extra picks so I don't think so. I could be wrong though.

I think supplemental picks would only go for free agents losses. The Colts did not get one when Brandon Burlsworth was killed in a car wreck.

We don't get anything, it's like a career ending injury. We shouldn't, either, Hill probably wouldn't have made the team. It's a human tragedy but not much of a talent issue for the team.

It may matter on the timing and circumstances of the incident. I don't believe the Steelers were compensated years ago when their 1st round pick DT Gabriel Rivera was paralyzed in a car crash, but the Raiders WERE compensated as I recall when a 2nd round draftee DT Washington State (#31 overall), Leon Bender, was killed after the draft due to a seizure disorder. Late note - I can't find anything more saying that the Raiders were compensated, maybe an AFC West fan can tell us more.

What happens to his salary and will it effect the cap?

Ernie Davis was the #1 pick and never played a down in the NFL (died of leukiema), and Cleveland got no compensation.

Davis (yet another in a long line of distinguished Syracuse alumni) was the first African American to win the Heisman.

I think that people are confusing the "supplemental" draft (for players such as Georgia's Oliver, who was declared academically ineligible, after the draft). And the Free agent "Compensation" picks granted at the ends of rounds 3-7 in the regualr draft to compensate for loss of free agents.

What happened to Hill is an absolute tradegy, and it appears that he spent his last moments trying to help another. I realize that trying to access the effects this will have on the Pats is natural for us fans, but I think we may want to wait a few more days before doing so.
