Default David Harris or SF 2008 #1

Assume we could have traded down from #28 to the early 2nd round and taken Harris while still getting the #4 we got to then trade for Moss.

Would you have preferred Harris to fill a need and get a player NOW or push the pick into the future for the upside of SF #1 ?

For me it's definitely the #1 because I think SF is a non playoff team until proven otherwise. Most seem to think they're a playoff team - if that's the case then I would take Harris now . . . but I don't think they are a playoff team.

If next years draft is really that much better than this year's one, than the pick is the better bet. I mean, even if SF gets to the playoffs, their pick would probably be worth like top 15 talent in this year's draft and we can survive with this year's linebacker corps for one more year b/c of the Thomas addition.

The choice between Harris or the SF 2008 #1 comes down to this. Draft a rookie LB with upside who can possibly be a major contributor in 2008- or draft a Top 15 - maybe even Top 10 pick in 2008 who can DEFINATELY be a contributor in 2008.

I felt Harris was a reach in the first round, as he'll need time to grow into the job of an NFL LB. I felt there was a good possiblity of trading back and still getting him if he was available at #28 - because even though I felt he was a reach I still think he's a good player.

I was a little bit surprised that he dropped as far as he did. Moving up to grab him like the Jets did I think was generally wise - but the fact that the Jets moved up twice to go for quality over quantity/quality (as all the picks they had I feel could have given them the quality depth they need) was the wrong strategy.

Don't get me wrong - I don't fault the Jets picks on either player, and I think both will be good - but they need quality depth most of all.

For the Patriots, again selecting Harris at #28 would have been a reach. Much better that they address LB elsewhere (as I think even good rookie LBs need time to develop) and grab a possible Top 15 + pick next year.

I voted SF #1, but I am not sure why we (fans) to this to ourselves. Can't change what is already done, but I suppose it's fun to play

Asked and answered, by BB.
He could have chosen harris, but traded the pick into next year instead.

Nothing to do but talk about it now . . . draft's over and training camp is off in the distance

Have to defer to the Pats brain trust on this one, if they wanted to they could have gotten him, however their lack of confidence in all the LB's made them believe there would be a better player available next year.

It really does make you ask, more than ever, will we EVER draft a LB in the first round ?

Harris wasn't perfect but he is big and strong, a good team guy, had good timed runs and, still, we didn't take him. I'm OK with that but for once a pretty good fit LB seemed to be there for us and we passed again.
