Yes, the team should stand firm. AS won't hold out. There is too much money involved. We can force him to play at a probowl level for this year or even the next two and lead us to a SB. He'll be a locker room leader. He'll help the youngsters come up to his level.

Now let's wake up. If we don't trade him, and don't sign any deal with him, we'll next see him next in July (except perhaps on the beach wearing a jersey from another team). He'll likely not show up on the field until the week before the season starts. He won't be in game shape. He will be much more likely to be injured than normal for our defensive backs (that's pretty dismal). He'll try to look good, and people will complain about his attitude. Those are HIS rights under the CBA.

AS has played out his contract and patriot fans don't have enough. We think he owes us a lifetime commitment. He's played well. He's met his commitments. Let him go.

Sorry, MG. Its not that we think that he OWES us a LIFETIME COMMITMENT. On the contrary. We believe that he's not nearly as good as he believes he is in his mind and we believe that he's not worth more than Brady or Seymour. Samuel is not better than them. I don't even believe he's better than Harrison. I don't believe that teams are scared of Asante and its actually SHOWN by his having 10 ints and 24 PDs. That tells me that they continued to throw to his side. Also, I still contend that at least 5 of his ints were the result of the D-line and LBs getting in and pressuring the QB into a Bad throw or them tipping the pass and Asante happened to be in the right place. Heck, I bet Earthwind Moreland would have made those ints because they were right to him. The other 5 were probably Samuel jumping the route. But, how many times did he get burned last year?

With all of the information coming out, it is putting the Patriots in a bad bargining position.

Getting anyone's first rounder may be tricky. Unless it is an idiot like Dan Snyder.

I agree with your assessment of AS's value to the patriots. Of course, we are in a bind and seem to be willing to overpay him for one year at almost $8M. I am fine with getting whatever we can, and move on.

I'm in the camp that says Asante hold more value playing this year and being gone next than trading him this season for a 1st. I just think this team is way too close this year to winning a SB and don't want to F with that team makeup.

I'd rather keep him this year, and draft a future contingancy in 07 in case he is gone in 08.

And Arman I think summed it up beautifully: Nate Clements isn't worth Nate Clements money, so ain't no way Asante is.

Insane, huh? Let us see who Samuel is playing for in the last half if this season. If it is anyone but the patriots (or on IR for the patriots), I would think that Samuel is not insane.
