I'm not a huge fan of it . . . and I do wonder if they could offer to trade a #3 for him as opposed to signing him as a RFA for a #2 . . . but he is the kind of guy who brings more to the table than just his receiving numbers. As we've seen for years with Troy, a guy who's a good PR, KR and who makes the big catch when it's needed (even if it's only for 5 yards - but on 3rd and 4) brings more value than shows up in stats.

If we got Welker would we just have to match Miami's tender of 1 year for 1.3 million?

Wow would they really consider giving up a second round pick for Welker?
Is he worth that much?
our second is more like a high 3rd, welker can run, great special teams, and can be your slot reciever i think its worth the pick hes proven

I'm not under the impression that this is anything special as a draft.

We'd sign him to a long term contract and Miami would have to either match or let him go for a #2.

I agree, no way I want Wes Walker if it costs a second round pick...

Name the last Patriots round 2 draft pick who wasn't a bust.
Dillon, and we traded for him.
I'd consider taking a guy whose proven he can play, is multi-role versitile and hurts your competitor.
The last 2nd rounder who wasn't a bust? Chad Jackson. Prior to that? Deion Branch.

The Pats have only had 2 2nd round busts under Belichick if you don't include 2000.

2001- Matt Light
2002 - Deion Branch
2003 - Eugene Wilson, Bethel Johnson
2004 - Marquis Hill and Corey Dillon (via trade)
2005 - They traded down out of the 2nd round
2006 - Chad Jackson (jury is still out)

Welker would be a terrific addition, especially considering the fairly strong possibility that Brown will retire.

Is he worth a second round pick? Of course, and here's why: he's proven himself, which is more than any second round pick (or even first round pick) can say. We KNOW he's good. And wouldn't it be nice if he were on our side the next time we played Miami?

Is he the big time #1 receiver we'd all like? No. But no one in free agency really fills that bill exactly, except perhaps for Randy Moss, who brings with him more baggage than Cleopatra. Welker is a number 3, but solid as a rock, and he is an excellent kick returner as well.

I am thrilled that the Pats are exploring their options but this might be a case where the cost is just too high.

Welker is not a Corey Dillon type impact player.

We need someone to stretch the field, Wes Walker is another Tim Dwight, another slot reciever, who is not worth a second round pick...
