Default Falcons fullback Justin Griffith is free?

Falcons FB Griffith poised for free agency
Negotiations between team, agent stalled

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 02/28/07

Falcons fullback Justin Griffith appears set to become the team's second veteran starter to venture into free agency according to his agent Michael McCartney.

There has been limited negotiations between the Falcons and the versatile fourth-year running back and both sides seemingly will turn in different directions. McCartney said Tuesday he is not completely ruling out Griffith re-signing with Atlanta but he will test the free-agent market for the best financial and playing situations.

I'll say it very simply. Griffith is fantastically underrated. The way that the Atlanta scheme worked required Griffith to know who to block, where to go in the second level, and which hole the HB would pick. Warrick Dunn is a good running back made great by Griffith, as opposed to Mack Strong and Lorenzo Neal, who, although good fullbacks, had the advantage of blocking for Alexander and Tomlinson.
He's a back that has good hands and can actually do something after the catch.

There's no such thing as a fullback on the Patriots.

Move on.

Obviously he isn't free if negotiations between him and the Falcons have stalled.

And what about Heath?

People all around the league love this guy, and other teams (1) use a fullback more (2) don't have a talented back like Evans. Consider Dallas, which played Oliver Hoyte, the rookie ILB, at the spot most of last year.

He's not as versatile a fullback as Evans either. A fumble concern.

Could Griffith handle more carries, i.e. be a power back option?

There are more experienced power backs available, however. If Dillon leaves, then one of those FAs needs to be signed.

Maroney has enough power he has the body to be an everydown back and thus there is not a need for a power back. I would like to see a RB who can give us insurance in case of injury that doesnt neccesarily mean a power back.

I'd like to see the Pats get this guy as our new FB/3rd Down Back. He's solid all around and may be good for short yardage.

Mills and Evans are signed and will play FB / TE role well this year. People also forget our OL has improved alot and going forward this group will stay together and develop reducing the blocking aspect alot.
