Default Hypothetical draft situation for the Lions

I was thinking about this at work today. Let's say Calvin Johnson just destroys the combine and pro day, putting up numbers that no one has ever seen at his position. Scouts proclaim that he is the best WR coming out of college in league history.

Would Detroit be wrong in drafting him if he was there at #2?

I honestly wouldn't say it's wrong to take him. People would obviously talk about the 3 consecutive 1st round WRs but what does that matter to improving the team? Rogers is no longer with them and Mike Williams is like 18th string.

Sure, they're definately in need of talent at other positions but I wouldn't pass him up just because they've drafted that position before.

I say take him.

they should use it as trade bait and move down picking up additional picks

I've seen a few mocks that have the Raiders taking Johnson at #1. If he performs at the combine like how we're all expecting, then it can definitely happen. Oakland can sign a FA QB (Garcia, maybe Trent Green) or even draft Drew Stanton in the 2nd round. The only problem with this scenario is Johnson has been on record saying he doesn't want to play for the Raiders. $$,$$$,$$$ changes everything though and he made those comments before Shell was dumped.

As for the Lions, I'd take Joe Thomas no matter the situation.

Who cares if Calvin Johnson is a stud receiver? Drafting receivers with top picks is a crapshoot. And even if he's great, look at Larry Fitzgerald - that guy puts up monster stats but his team still stinks. Bottom line, using a high pick on a receiver doesn't translate into wins.

Better example would have been Charles Rogers and M. Williams

God help the Lions FO if they still believe, despite all statistical likelihood to the contrary, that the best value for their team in the first round for something like 4 years running, is a wide receiver. Oh that's right, they did pick a QB [sic] a few years back.

Thank God I'm a Pats fan.

if for some reason the raiders don't take russell, he's a lock to go to detroit IMO, if oakland picks russell like most think they will, i don't think there is any reason to pick a wr at #2, they just don't need CJ like they used to.

If ever there was a moment to take a receiver high up, it feels like it is right now with this guy. But surely even Matt Millen would hesitate to use another high first on a receiver? Wouldn't he?
