A common assumption is that no matter the outcome of this coming playoff game, the Jets' season has already been a success, they are playing with "house money", their fans and organization are already giddy about the dawn of a bright future. But they are fooling themselves. Just as Man-Gina's boat began to float after the Jets victory in the Mud Bowl in week 10, the house of cards that is the new Jet regime can collapse in ruins after this one game. How? By forcing Pop-gun Pennington into another embarrassing performance on the big stage, BB will force the Jets to accept that China-Doll Chad will never lead them to the promised land. This realization will lead the c o c k y media darlings Tannenbaum/Mangini to hasten Chad's departure from NY as starting QB. But the dirty secret of the Jesters' mild success is that the China-Doll, and not Man-Gina, is the straw that stirs the drink. Without Pennington, a proven winner, the Jesters will fade again into mediocrity.

A good quarterback is the difference between success and failure in a parity driven league. Looking south to Miami, Saban already appears to be throwing in the towel because of three bad decisions he made at the Qb position: 1) passing on Brees 2) signing Culpepper 3) signing Harrington. Saban blew it on all 3 chances and doomed his regime from the start, despite his excellence at Xs and Os. Other great coaches have stumbled when saddled with sub-par Qb talent.

Man-Gina was more fortunate than Saban: he inherited a proven winning Qb who miraculously stayed healthy for an entire season for the 1st time in his brittle career. "China Doll" Chad Pennington is a savvy leader who compensates for his chicken wing with heady play. He has been a passable winning Qb, going 31-22 in the regular season, a stunning accomplishment for a franchise as historically inept as the NY Titans. With China Doll healthy, the Jets won the division at 9-7 in '02 and advanced to the divisional round, where he threw up a comical, deer-in-the-headlights, colossal choke job against the Raiders. In '04, with China Doll reasonably healthy, the Jets went 10-6 and again advanced to the divisional round, although Chad, with his off-target pop-gun, couldn't get the job done with an assist from the equally erratic Doug Brien.

Now, Man-Gina is getting all the credit for the team's success in '06, but the Jets are just doing what they always do when Pennington is healthy: WIN 10 GAMES. This time, Chad's doing it with Man-Gina's mumbles in the background instead of Herm's "mumbo-jumbo".

If the Jets EVER jettison ChinaDoll for, say, Kellen Clemens, this will doom the franchise, gut it from the inside out, because it is ChinaDoll's leadership, presence of mind and ability to run OC Schottenheimer's complex scheme that stirs the drink, not Mumbles Mangini. Without Pennington the Jets are just another 6-10 team losing faith in their coach, like the current Dolphins in Miami. Kellen Clemens is not a big time Qb and will never be one. He has a sub-par arm, and regularly showed a lack of composure in big spots in college.

So if the Pats can force Pennington into an embarrassing performance this Sunday, IMO they will sew seeds of doubt into the Jet hierarchy about their most important player, and begin the demolition of the Man-Gina regime from within; and soon the newest band of Jesters will join the Saban regime in Miami on the ash-heap of football history.

But all the press Mangini is receiving will convince this overconfident neophyte organization that it is Man-Gina, and not China-Doll, who sprinkles the pixie dust. They will begin to contemplate replacing Pennington by Monday morning.

I hope the Jets continue to rise, become better, and even an excellent team .... so the Pats will look even better by beating them.

Not sure about any "mortal blows", but I do think that good preparation, mentally as well as physically, with the commitment to take ownership of the line of scrimmage will determine who wins this game.

That Pats have the personnel to do it, but... we'll see how they do on Sunday. That's why we play the games.

I don't understand this annoitment of Man-gina. Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that the Jests almost beat the Steelers at home during the playoffs?

Seems to me that last year was an anomoly due to Pennington's injury.

I think you're right. The Jets were never a "bad" team recently, but they did depend on Pennington and he got hurt (again) last year. This year has been different, largely due to Chad's recovered health and success on the field.

The thing is, the Pats seem to know how to deal with Pennington, healthy or not. So I tend to feel confident about this game. Last time was a wake-up call, I believe. We will see on Sunday.

Look, nice thought but it really falls apart when you apply logic to it.

First your theory that Mangini is nothing and Penny is everything fails to explain how the jesters improved on the other side of the ball.

We put up 24 on them in the first meeting but could only manage 14 on home turf against them. How is that possible to credit to Penny when he doesn't even play on defense.

I refuse to accept that the guy who for years I have enjoyed maligning and seeing maligned by posters on this board affectionately as "Noodle arm" is the cause of their success.

I think mangini deserves coach of the year contention if not honors. Doesn't change that he is not an ethical standard bearer and probably didn't show enough gratitude to BB/respect for BB's opinion (to stick around another year and wait on a coaching opportunity outside of AFCE). But I think he is egocentric enough to believe that while he learned from BB; that he could have been successful learning elsewhere as well.

Whichever I just hope BB was playing cagy in round 2 and has a few tricks up his sleeve Mangini hasn't seen yet for round 3. Cause BB's gameplan in game 2 stunk up the joint. He was outcoached that game.

Could not agree more, and believe BB took responsibility. Do not see us going into this game unprepared, suspect that BB and staff have hunkered down and thoroughly investigated what the Jets have been doing and their game plan will reflect something completely different. There are some conspiracy theories, i.e. Hank Poteat giving out info, however suspect a lot of disguises this Sunday. Whether or not this will be a critical blow for the Jets, remains to be seen.
