Default Broncos packing it in for the season?

AP reports HC Mike Shanahan's long list of things he must address for the Denver Broncos to recover from their four-game losing streak grew by one very big item Monday when second-year CB Darrent Williams suggested some of his teammates don't believe their season is salvageable. "Some people are ready to hang it up, you know, you can tell," said Williams, who didn't name names. "And it's hard when you're losing. It makes everything hard, it makes coming to practice hard. It makes coaches harder on you. It just makes everything harder when you're losing. "So, a few guys are probably ready to hang it up. I don't know who. But I'm not." The Broncos (7-6) believe they must win their final three games to reach the playoffs. Yet Williams, who gave up several big plays in Denver's 48-20 loss at San Diego on Sunday, said that while nobody was outwardly conceding the season, he sensed some teammates were ready to cash it in. "You can kind of feel that it's just one of those seasons," Williams said. "... It can get hard right at this time, and it's easy to just say, 'I'm going to just play these three games and get an early vacation."' As possible evidence of his charges, Williams blamed the Broncos' four-game skid - only the second in Shanahan's 11 seasons - on some players taking some plays off. "Because," he suggested, "if we got 100 percent effort from everybody, we could easily win these games."

I wouldn't buy into any of this, Denver is actually in the best position to make the playoffs as a wild-card. At Arizona, Cincinnati at home (with Cincy coming off a Monday-nighter ALSO on the road) and home vs. San Francisco - these are 3 very winnable games. They've been through a tough stretch the last 4 games (especially considering they had to play SD twice, they never win in KC and Cutler made his first start vs. Seattle). Their conference record is pretty solid at 7-4.

If anything, Shanahan is going to use these comments to challenge his team these last 3 weeks.

Don't be surprised if we see the Broncos visit Foxboro again on the evening of January 6th.

Shanahan gave up on the season when he started Cutler. He sent that maessage out loud and clear. It is not surprising that some have accepted what Shanahan accepted.

Those are also 3 very losable games for a team playing a rookie QB and with a defense that has been beaten up and worn down trying to carry the ultra conservative offense they have ran all year.
