Belichick is going to cut quality depth? Sanders is eh as a starter, but how many teams have a backup better than him? I doubt BB does it.

BjGE, well you have oft. injured Taylor, Morris and Maroney, and aging Faulk. So you think BB is going to get rid of quality depth? Also, I don't know how many other guys out there are better options than BJGE at this point.

If the Patriots were to tag Mankins, they'd be giving Mankins more power than he's had in this entire scenario to date.

If you tag him and he doesn't sign it he's screwed again...being as he's the one who wants to be traded who says he will NEVER play here again. He would sign it only to facilitate a trade knowing that no one is going to sign him to an offer sheet approaching what he wants and trade a first and a third for him (or he'd be somewhere else already). Of course he may find out along the way that no one is going to pay him that period. And if the Patriots believe that at the start of the next league season they either won't tag him or won't tag him for long. Just long enough to shop him early in FA and establish if he has trade value. If he does they can tell him his ticket out of Foxboro is waiting... If not, they can rescind it.

What do you think he would do, sign it pre-emptively to spite them and end up spiting himself...no, don't answer that given this is Mankins we're talking about...

You keep making statements like this and acting as if they are true. Clearly, they are not. He's not screwed now, and he won't be screwed if he doesn't sign the tag. He's kept his money and has a nice big home. You keep acting as if this is some guy blowing through his cash and chasing the Travis Henry/Antonio Cromartie fatherhood title.

He doesn't need to bother signing anything until a trade is made that would include him going to an acceptable team for an acceptable salary.

Except that, if Mankins 'sees' the same thing, he can just rush on down and sign that Franchise offer. At that point, he'll be making more than $10 million dollars to play guard.

How is it spiting himself? He'll be making more than $10 million dollars for one season. You can't have it both ways. If it's all about money, it's a huge win for him, since he'll be banking all that money at age 29 and ready for a megadeal the following year, or for another franchise tag at 120%. If it's all about principle, the tag is irrelevant.

Mangold:

7 years, $55 million, with $20 million guaranteed.

Nick Mangold signs seven-year deal with New York Jets - NFL News - FOX Sports on MSN

Just to be clear, PFT is claiming that the guarantee is a full guarantee for injury, but not for skill.

Nick Mangold gets $22.5 million guaranteed for injury | ProFootballTalk.com

At 25 years of age, it's not likely that the "skill" issue should ever really come into play, but I thought it should be included in the post.

I wonder where they "heard" all this from. I guess they missed the part where the Patriots cut Mankins tender from 3.27M to under 1.5M?

I've said this before, and I am saying it again: I think that the real problem lies with Mankins' agent. I believe that his agent has NOT told Mankins the entire truth, and that Mankins is being poorly served in this situation.

Were it to be me in charge of negotiations, I'd be asking for a one on one meeting between me and Mankins, with his agent present, to clear the air and see what's going on.

That's just my personal opinion, but to my mind, it makes sense.

Just sayin'
It does mean something......this is a form of communication......Publicists in the old hollywood days did it.....politicians do it,diplomats, too.

Brett Favre is the king of this way of communicating.Manks has backed himself into a corner. The patriots have taken him at his word that negotiations are over and he is moving on.
("I'm really,really,REALLY.....leaving this time").

His agent is using the "friends" thingy and his shills at the herald as an outlet to "stir" the sleeping giant(patriots). It may not be much, but Mankins needs to create some kind of alternative to sitting out the whole year.

Contrary to popular belief,it's extremely difficult for a player or agent to craft a sign and trade deal for themselves, without any input or communication from your old team.Sort of like working in a vacuum.Once you get close to the day teams are finalizing their 53 man rosters, guys like Mankins,McNeil and Vincent Jackson will realize that life really does move on.

Revis finally knows it....The Patriots always know it...and Logan is too smart,NOT to know it.

If Mankins sits out, hell is going to freeze over before the Patriots reward him with a 10 million franchise tag.

If true, you should be able to provide their names.

The revelant franchise tag number for Mankins is the 2011 franchise tag number.

While I did some research, I am not sure that my guesstimate is correct.

I think that the five highest adjusted cap numbers for offensive linemen this year are

Jake Long 11,325,000
Jahri Evans 9,400,000
Eric Steinbach 9,025,000
Eugene Monroe 8,752,500
Joe Thomas 8,200,000

That is an average of 9,340,500. I would not be surprised to see Mangold's name on the list once the details of his contract come out.

Understood, but it's not out, and it could still change depending upon future signings, so I couldn't give an accurate number. I did note that I was referring to the current year's (2010) number. Thanks for the follow up work on it that you did.

$9.34 million for one year would still be a better deal for Mankins than the alleged $7 million plus the $1.54 million of the lower tender number for two seasons. Although it would be less than the combination of that alleged $7 million plus the $3.268 million from the higher tender, I think, given the potential of $9.34 million, most of us would agree that avoiding an entire year of potential injury at the loss of 'just' $928,000 would be a very sensible approach on Mankins' part if that's how things shake out.
