Too bad for the guy. Liked the signing. Can you imagine the panic here were this IR move announced weeks ago before collective training camp confidence built via Welker's unexpectedly early return, Tate's performance and Edelperson's spectacular game?

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck." RAH
My guess is, beyond the wear and tear of a great career, he wasn't.
It just became apparent that his skills stood little chance of displacing a promising player off the roster, and there was probably limited interest by both Holt and other teams in having him move on with another team.
In that respect I'm thinking that IR was a nice respectful face saving move in which the Pats take the classy road, decline to cut a player of Holt's caliber, and place him on IR so that he can announce his retirement on his own terms.
why was he put on IR and not cut, if he has only a 1-year contract?
I have some question as to whether Holt is truly injured. It may be that IR was a nice respectful face saving move in which the Pats take the classy road, decline to cut a player of Holt's caliber, and place him on IR so that he can announce his retirement on his own terms.
I believe, but am not certain, that players on IR collect their salary (as opposed to just the signing bonus) as opposed to those who are cut.
If so this is an especially classy move by the Patriots because I think Holt's $1.15 million contract was mostly salary and not bonus.
Moves like that make veterans want to play for Kraft and Belichick, even though there's no guarantee every veteran works out.
EDIT - I guess Holt has a knee injury that will require surgery... so I guess he really is injured, but then again I'm getting my knee scoped in a few days and that's pretty minor surgery.

"Some guys play in all-star games, some guys don't. I don't know who picks all those all-star teams. In all honesty, I don't know who picks the combine, for that matter," Belichick said. "How does (Miami-Ohio offensive lineman Brandon) Brooks not get invited to the combine? How did Vollmer not get invited to the combine? I don't know. We can't really worry about that. We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."
Wrong. He's having knee surgery. Unless knee surgery is also a face-saving move...
Yeah - just saw that on the later report. So probably legit - but still, I'm having my knee scoped soon and that's surgery but pretty minor... something I could not have done for a few years if I wanted to put it off...
There's a lot of players who might benefit from a scope to clean out their knees but are going to play through the season.
