You seem to have misunderstood where Branch is coming from.

Branch thinks men of honor should keep their word. A verbal contract is a man's pride and bond.

A written contract is just a bunch of lines on a sheet paper.

I was unsure if he was going to pull a "the team promised me so much money after such and such year".
