That was certainly the problem.

I was thinking of the first Denver game, where Pass played and was quite effective.

ps I didn't actually compare Cobbs to Payton. All I said was that we could have used a RB like Cobbs against Denver to keep Denver's D honest. A "between the tackles banger" would at least make Play Action work.
Cobbs isn't exactly an inside "banger." People are comparing him as "the next Faulk," which would mean, as we've seen in the preseason, he's more of a draw/third down/receiving back.

There's nothing to show Cobbs would have been any better than what the Pats had in Denver. He wouldn't have gotten any carries over Dillon, Faulk, and Evans. In the first Denver game, there's nothing to suggest he would have been any better than Famous Amos.

pps I realize Cobbs was a "freakin' UFDA," but how different is that from being a "freakin' seventh round pick"?

ppps I also realize that Cobbs has no "real" NFl carries yet, but Pass has averaged 20 carries A YEAR over his career, about 1 per game. I'm not sure how much that proves when it comes down to being a between-the-tackles running threat. I understand that Pass can catch the ball also, but that wasn't the problem vs Denver. We had plenty of pass catchers (no pun intended). What we needed was a power runner.
Again, I wouldn't call Cobbs a power runner by any means.

Evans and Dillon were the power runners. They still are.

I still believe that if we had Eckel or Chapman (or Cobbs) to play against Denver, we'd have hosted the Steelers at home the next week. A running game was all we lacked.
Can you pass over whatever is making you think Kyle Eckel or Chapman or Cobbs would make the difference between winning and losing that game?

They would have been INACTIVE!!! I seriously doubt they would have been any more effective than what Dillon and Faulk were bringing, especially behind that battered OL! That's just a plain ludicrious idea - that if Kory Chapman was on the roster, based on what we saw in the preseason, that he would suddenly be the Pats' savior and lead them to victory over the Broncos.

(or are you trying to tell me the Pats would make Dillon inactive in favor of a scrub like Chapman or Eckel or Cobbs?)

If we had Maroney, sure, there would be a running game and different outcome.

And Senator, Patrick Cobbs is no Laurence Maroney.

Less than half of those players will have jobs past this weekend.

He was also running behind two draft picks in Garrett Mills and Dan Stevenson, two proven backups in Mruc and Yates and the WR blocking specialist known as Bam.
You guys with your damned facts ... think you're so smart :-)

The only problem is that neither Chapman nor Eckel played anywhere near where Cobbs has, so that comparison is not valid. Yes, I liked both those players, but Cobbs has played a CUT ABOVE any of those other backs...and that is where the problem is. I must have missed the last few preseasons, because I haven't seen other 2nd 3rd tiered backs do anything like Cobbs has done. Not even Cedric Cobbs. I hope he's a keeper..RBs like this are hard to find..I think they keep him on the 53.

Of course not..he's a totally different style runner...And as of now, NEITHER has played in an NFL game. I agree that Maroney will help the team's running back situation FAR more..but that isn't the issue. And one can say keep Evans all you want, but the question is going to be who is inactive for a game and that's a lot harder with only 2 QBs. I think one must look further than this year and who has the greater upside, Evans or Cobbs and how hard it's going to be to find another back ala Faulk. Cobbs has the tools, the smarts and I think the intangibles to be that back. If there was a way to gurantee he'd make it the PSqd, I'd buy that..but with a BIG chance he'd get picked up, I'd keep him over Evans.

Actually Eckel and Chapman had great preseasons last year and were the flavor of the month. I recall seeing many 53-man projections with Eckel on the team.

I think you may be overstating Cobbs - and then some. A lot of players are going to look good in the preseason, but that doesn't mean they're "hard to find," a "cut above," or "done something other backs haven't."

Maybe I am, overstating Cobbs, but I don't recall either Chapman or Eckels having games anywhere close to what Cobbs has had. THAT is a fact that I think you are overlooking. I agree a lot of players look good in preseason, very true, nonetheless, I think Cobbs is a cut above either of those players, FAR above both. I'll leave it to BB and the staff to see what they do with him, but my opinion is he will be a player in a few years, whether here (preferably) or with another team.

I think we should trade that bum Maroney for the real back of the future:

Cedric Cobbs.

(Why can't we get guys like him?)

It's funny, because you know the Charger boards are full of people afraid that they'll lose Ray Perkins if they try to get him to the practice squad.

Ditto the Bengals for De De Dorsey and the Bucs for Earnest Graham.

I don't think many people on this board have heard of any of these guys. I'm a draftnik and I'm not familiar with Perkins or Dorsey. I doubt BB/SP are licking our chops to poach one of these guys off a practice squad, and vice versa, I doubt any enemy GM feels that way about Cobbs.
