Default Three Final Choices on a 49 man roster

THE 49 MAN ROSTER (46 safe)
49 is really all we need. The bottom four positions can be used for various purposes such as special teams, depth, development and injury. The Shadow Roster and the Practice Squad can help out for these functions. There is plenty of room for pickups if pioli so wishes. I don't the picks any tougher than in previous years.

OFFENSE (22) 20 safe
2 QB, 4 RB, 4 TE, 4 WR, 8 OL
(WR's are Branch or replacement fa,Jackson,Brown,Caldwell)
#4 RB spot Evans vs. Cobbs
#8 OL Spot Stevenson vs. Britt
------------------------------------
DEFENSE (24) 23 safe
6 DL, 9 LB, 9 DB
starting 3 DL's plus Green, Wirght and Sullivan now seem safe
starting 4 LB's plus Bruschi plus Sters Izzo, Davis and Gardner seem safe
starting 4 db's plus Hawkins, Sanders, Gay, Chad Scott and Andrews safe

#9 LB - Chad Brown vs. Mincey vs. Woods vs Alexander vs. Klecko vs. Beisel
---------------------------------------
SPECIALISTS (3) 3 safe
-----------------------------------
FURTHER ASSUMPTIONS
IR Mitchell, Hill
PUP Pass
-------------------------------------
WE STILL HAVE MORE ROSTER SPOTS - CHOOSE FOUR
a 10th DB (I'm counting Andrews in the 9)
a 7th DL
a 10th LB / Ster
an 11th LB / Ster
a 9th OL
a 5th WR
---------------------------------------

MY CURRENT CHOICES
Britt (over Stevenson; OT's are critical)
Evans (over Cobbs)
Chad Brown (an experienced backup OLB)

#50 DB Poteat (over Warfield)
#51 Stone (over Childress)
#52 Besiel (over Alexander)
#53 Klecko (over Thomas)

PRACTICE SQUAD (the 8 that make it through waivers)
Cobbs
Stevenson
Hand
Bramlett
Smith
Woods
Mincey
Thomas
Childress or another WR

I think Cobbs will be scooped up by another team if he is put on the practice squad, but I don't know how you could carry 4 rb's. So that will be a big decision.

I honestly think Bam should be on the active roster. I think he's made some really good plays and has shown good hands unlike Caldwell to this point. I know he's small but he has a nack for finding the open spots in the zone and he gets separation, again unlike Caldwell.

I agree, I want to see what Bam can do on Sundays.

People really got to stop thinking Cobbs has any shot. I think because he is a running back, his good play against backups catches fans eyes more than other positions. What about the linemen who have opened the holes for him during garbage time? Will they be scooped up too?

Cobbs is a project at best. He has ZERO shot to make the roster. He may not even be on the practice squad, depending on what they think they need for depth at other positions. They may just tell him "look, go home to Texas, work on your leg strength, upper body strength, body fat percentage....(whatever) and we'll sign you in January and send you to Europe. We like you, but you need work"

He won't be picked up. There are scrubs all over the league who put up decent numbers running the ball late. And if he does get picked up for another teams practice squad? Oh well. Its not like its Reggie Bush or something. Check the NFL boxscores on nfl.com for other players putting up good numbers who are marginal at best thru 3 exhibition weeks. You gotta use some perspective. Cobbs wasn't even signed until May, weeks after the draft. He was not exactly a hot undrafted free agent.

I have seen some spark in the kid. He's done alright. He may deserve a practice squad shot, depending on how much room they have. He may not. But he has absolutely NO shot at a roster spot this year.

I very much agree that it is unlikely Cobbs will make the starting day roster this year. For what it is worth, BB hinted that this is the case in his press conference today as reported by Mike Reiss. If you read BB's wording carefully, BB said Cobbs "had" some nice plays and others that he "would" need to work on. As I read those words, I was surprised that Bill did not use the present tense of "will" need to work on. His wording sounded distant as if whatever needed to be worked on would be apart from the Patriots team. Perhaps I read too much into BB's wording?

Agree but--
I'd keep Klecko just for pass rush. One critical area an injury or two would really hurt us.
Sullivan is Thomas' competition.

Felger started his question, "Correct me if I'm wrong," BB quickly interjected, "I can't wait--"

``The officials now are evaluating the players and their performance, I mean, that's great,'' Belichick deadpanned. ``I can't say how much that means to me, really.''
