Default Hobbs is our #1 CB

Ellis Hobbs is the 2006 Patriots' number one cornerback. There, I said it.

If we acquire Law, we will play Law and Hobbs, with Samuel in the nickel role. Warfield and Gay might actually be in a dead heat with Samuel --- not sure why I singled out Samuel in my scenario. A nice situation for us this year!

Does anyone know if Samuels started at all with the number ones this minicamp. I don't want to read too much into it but he didn't get mentioned much on the front line!

Maybe T-shirt will treat us to the Poteat bongo's. Haven't seen them for a while.

But now we have a Hank Poteat poster, so bring on the bongo's.

If by "number one" CB, you mean the LCB spot, I'd disagree, but I think he's got the RCB spot locked down, and will eventually be the best CB on the team.
Also think you're right that if Law were to come back (ain't happening) then Law would bump Samuel out of the LCB spot, and down to covering the slot on the inside. And that would be a fantastic lineup (again, not happening).

And Hank, the bongos will beat forever!! (although I can't find the bongos on my hard drive!! I was woefully unprepared for a Hank(!) sighting)

Samuel is the "#1" CB so deal with it. Why not just say starting CB's. If they are both on the field as starters who gives a damn, ones LCB ones RCB, #1 and #2 stuff is stupid.

Hobbs certainly looks to be a fantastic player but you cant just catupult him to "#1" after he played a half of a season. Samuel looked pretty damn good in the second half and will be the "#1" cornerback.

They'll find out Randy can't run consistently anymore. He'll drive [Tom] Brady and [Bill] Belichick crazy. This is just my personal opinion from what I saw: He's losing his legs. He's becoming an old man fast.

I was at the playoff game in Denver and watched Samuel get juked by the tight end ( Putzier) for a first down completion - right there I said we are drafting a CB in the first round this year. I was wrong about that, but I totally agree that by mid season Hobbs should emerge as the best CB on the team. That includes Law if he happens to be here ( which I doubt ). I've been very high on Hobbs since he stepped in last year and almost changed the face of he secondary ( along with Hawkins stepping in). I'm hoping that he's the third round steal he appears to be.

Agreed. I have had this discussion with a few people on this board. Samuel got picked on more than any one else last year in that depleted secondary and especially towards the end of the year when Hobbs started opposite him.

I will be very surprised if Samuel (barring injuries) is the starting CB on 9/10

Samuel excels covering the slot receiver, though can be exposed against wideouts. Hobbs is very capable over both the slot and wide receivers, as is Gay. Law excels against wideouts. This flexibility allows the Patriots to exploit favorable matchups (assuming Law is signed).
