5 weeks into FA season, Pats' approach still makes no sense
The lack of excitement on this board is palpable. The wind has been taken out of most fans' sails by this passive offseason approach.
Still makes No sense whatsoever.
Brady in his prime with a few more years left. Why not go all out now...like the JETS and try to win it while you still can.
Rely on ROOKIES to get you over the hump, including three second round drat picks...how does that make sense.
OK so they didn't want to pay big bucks to Peppers or Boldin...there still were many VETERANS who could have helped this team. Damion Lewis and Alge Crumpler thats how they make this team better
One thing is certain...if the PATS don't pick up some veteran playmakers they will not compete with the Jets or Dolphins this year.
This offseason sucks...and if you think the draft will make it all better...give it up
By the way one more thing... this board used to have a lot more interesting threads on a daily basis...but the homers out here have managed to try to scare away anyone with an independent opinion...and they have done a great job...look at this board it is DEAD
and I will say it in advance to those of you who will try to rip me a new one...(Please be quiet - edited)

Which veteran playmakers were available that the Pats passed on? What free agents did you think they shou;d have gone after? What moves did the Jets make that you expect to make a huge difference? (BTW I think Cromartie is overhyped. Ask the Charger fans about his performance the last couple of years.)

Belichick wants 2 top 10 picks next year ... nobody told you.
Re: 5 weeks into FA season, PATS approach still makes no sense
Give us names. Which FAs did you want? And would you rather have had them than Wilfork, Bodden, TBC, Faulk, or Neal? Because if you count the guys the Pats kept, this has been one of the best offseasons so far.
Re: 5 weeks into FA season, PATS approach still makes no sense
So blow away money? We're for sure going to have a cap again after this year so why destroy our chances of keeping and adding newer players for one go for it all year with still multiple holes?
The fact is this team right now is a 10 win team. And for that matter the Patriots and NFL staff no for sure that this year more than any other year ever there are going to be more veteran cuts after the draft.
We still might see very good players get cut that we can then fill holes much cheaper than what we would have paid 2 months ago.

Why is everyone so enamored with the Jets offseason - they traded for a cornerback that hasn't done anything in this league in a couple of years - could he peform this year, sure, but I'm sure if the Pats had acquired him everyone would be pointing to the Chargers/Jets game and his lack of tackling as a reason it was a bad move. They got rid of a very good running back that consistently performed and replaced him with a selfish over the hill running back thats played in warm weather for the last 10 years and who's recent playoff performances have consisted of him sitting on the sidelines pouting. I'm looking forward to Tomlinson playing smashmouth football in December in New York - I'm picturing him sitting on the bench with his head down and a coat on to keep him warm.
I certainly think the Jets are going to be a good team this year but the fascination with their offseason seems crazy to me and good luck to them if Shonn Greene goes down because if their running game disappears, Sanchez will be throwing picks everywhere.
If you want to complain that the Pats haven't done anything then I have no problem with that, although I like what they've done this offseason. Who else were they expected to sign - the FA market was pathetic this year. They made an offer to Peppers, but what's the point in overpaying for him.
If the Jets or Dolphins had 4 picks in the top 53 we'd all be crying that they've positioned themselves in a deep draft to get 4 solid players... It seems that the Pats can't do anything to please people anymore - if they go out and sign a bunch of veterans everyone complains that there getting old and signing JAGS, if they don't sign JAGS and accumulate draft picks then we complain that their to young and not taking advantage of Brady... This is the reason I hardly visit this board anymore - its not the lack of signings by the Pats - its the constant whinning about everything.

I do agree with you to a point. I agree that you cannot rely on rookies to bring us over the top. We do need more veterans on this team. The Patriots are playing it smart. There could be a lock out next season. Also, we have a lot of time to make moves. The draft hasnt started yet and i think we will see some surprise moves or trades for veteran restricted free agents. Patience is a virtue. I do agree with you about the die hard homers who think they are the only one who is right. EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO THEIR OPINION. Its about RESPECT! Treat people how you want to be treated. We have a long way till the season starts and i have a feeling we will be in a more 4-3 attacking defense than a 3-4 two gap defense. We shall see. We have no idea whats going on and thats what BB wants!

I know that you're a closet Jets troll and all, but **** it, I'm going to take the bait: what exactly have the Jets done that qualifies them as going 'all out'?
The lack of the new CBA killed the FA pool, and the result of that is what you're seeing now: nobody's really improving a whole lot. Seriously, go ahead and name the teams that have substantially improved since the end of last season. I'll even help you out: the Ravens. Adding Stallworth and Boldin is huge for them, and IMO they're now the favorites in the AFCN, if not the AFC entirely. The Bears? They got Peppers, so there's that, but still haven't addressed their major issues. They're still pretty far from being serious competitors. The Redskins, I guess, since McNabb is a real upgrade, even if Parker and Johnson aren't any good and he still doesn't have anyone to throw to.
Who else? The Jets just swapped one overrated CB who hasn't had a standout season in years for another, and a productive over-30 RB for a washed-up one. If you'd told me that the Pats could have made it to this point in the offseason with no significant losses, and Wilfork and Bodden signed long-term, I would have taken that from day one. I'd like to see Brady and Mankins extended, and would prefer to see some WR depth added, but there was never a feasible means of addressing the lack of pass rush, so I can't hold that against them. Bottom line, like everyone else, the Pats just have to hit on the draft.
