If they don't call these penalties and don't fine the players that do stuff like this then defensive players will keep testing the limits about how close they can get to certain parts of the body. I hate watching defenders roll up on a QBs knee while they are stepping into a throw. It is cringe worthy. And I dont think these penalties are a bad thing when a player is in no position to deflect or absorb a blow.

Despite this, and I understand defenders complaints, football will still be a contact sport, and we've seen examples of QBs getting hit HARD but legally. But after watching that video I hope Suggs thinks twice about doing something like that to another QB knowing it will cost his team 15 yards and himself in the wallet.

That's obviously true - and it's kind of like what they said earlier this afternoon that you have to call the slaps the same way you do the major ones. You have to keep them away from the head period. It's just hard to call it "roughing the passer" when a guy's hand glances a helmet

I don't understand all the outrage from the Raven's or the comment from Rodney (although I think he's just busting and old friend's balls).

The rules don't leave much room for interpretation. Touch a guy below the knees ... FLAG! Slap a QBs helmet ... FLAG!

If you don't care for the rules try to change them in the offseason, but it's black and white. I'm not a HOMER. As soon as I saw Wright hit Flacco in the helmet (although it appeared like he hit him in the shoulder and as Flacco turned his hand moved up to the helmet) I expected and AGREED with the flag. I like the rules as they are now.

The one rule they need to work on is the "In the grass" rule. Some refs blow the whistle quickly and others take too long superbowl. They need to work on consistency. As long as the rules are spelled out and they're consistently called, defenders shouldn't have any reason to complain!

one thing that seems to be lost is that Brady didn't seem to care. He was almost glad he did it so the penalty was called. obviously he doesn't want guys diving at his knee but he seemed to just shrug it off like it was no biggie so long as the flag came out.

Exactly - and I think it was Ray Lewis that made the comment about how the penalty shouldn't have been called because Brady got up with a smile on his face or some such. Clearly if there is a rule, and it can be exploited within the limits of the game - why not?

I don't think the NFL can add a clause to the rule that says the penalty can only be applied if the player is writhing around on the ground in pain.

I'm not arguing the call, there'sa new emphasis and that's a penalty now. The Brady, swimming on the ground rule or something. I'm thinking more of Wilforks solid tackle a couple weeks ago and the love tap on the helmet. You have to let the refs ignore something that's technically a penalty, or frustrated players will give up trying to figure out what they can do and wham somebody.

I think they need to use their judgment and evaluate intent and harm.

Hate to use basketball, but Dave Cowens once started complaining when the refs were calling every ticky tack thing. Technically fouls, but impeding the flow of the game.

Finally Cowens looked right at the ref, laid a guy out, put his arm up and said "that's a foul". Refs got the point and let them play.

The officials are definitely being overly protective of the QBs this season, in general, and it's not just been this one game. The helmet call was weak, but the call on the knee had to be made given the rules. It was not a Wilfork situation, or a 'slide down' situation, it was a play made right on the knee. It's all about protecting the biggest dollar earners.
