Hey guys and gals, everyone has been asking if the Patriots will use Julian Edelman in some kind of Wildcat formation, well this afternoon at their practice, they used Edelman as a QB for the first time. It was just a couple of snaps, nothing too long, but he lined as a QB and ran a few plays. He looks very relaxed and comfortable as a WR in the offense. Not so much yet as a QB.

It could be a smokescreen with all the Michael Vick talk now with the Eagles, but who knows?

Check back tomorrow in the Pats Pub and Pool Hall and I'll have a link with pictures since we can't post any here.

I was there. It was at two different points in practice they worked on this. I saw them working on it at the very begining of practice and then again at the end when they did 11 on 11.

They ran maybe 3 or 4 plays out of it, but ran some more than once. Edelman was in the shotgun with Maroney next to him. They had 3 receivers on the field....Moss, Galloway and Ventrone in the slot. I assume normally Welker would be in the slot but he wasn't practicing yesterday. Either Galloway or Ventrone would come in motion. When the ball was snapped, he'd do a belly to Maroney, either handing it off or keeping it (not sure if there was an option or not)......and then by that time the motion man would be coming in the opposite direction Maroney went in and Edelman would reverse and run an option wide with the motion receiver....pitching it sometimes depending on what the defender did. I saw them run one passing play with Edelman dropping back after faking the option like a college option QB.

They worked on it in both directions, sometimes running the same play but just the opposite way.

It was for the first offense too as they had a scout D out there (with offensive guys the first time they worked on it).....so I know it wasn't just a scout look for the D. It was actualy plays the Offense will run. Patriots offensive plays.

I guess it's not a trick play per se since they are taking Brady out and running this instead of trying to completely surprise the opposing D by leaving him in and only showing their hand right before the snap.

I think the Pats will eventually have Edelman as the 3rd QB, as long as either KOC or Walter steps up (Hoyer to practice squad). Whether this happens before the season starts or at week 8 depends on how KOC and Walter are doing.

I suspect that the Pats see a lot of potential in Walter, and how he works out will probably determine whether we drop a 3rd QB before the season starts or mid-season. If Walters seems to learn well in our system, I think we drop KOC the moment BB thinks Walter is ready to be #2.

There is a lot of incentive to make a determination on Walter quickly because if he doesn't work out and BB is ok with KOC as #2, you can drop a 3rd QB before the season starts to make room to keep an extra roster spot open for this talented team.

Problems arise if BB is not happy with either KOC or Walter as a #2. He'll be forced to carry 3 QB's to develop or find a solid number 2.

Either way, I figure by season end Edelman will take up WR, QB3 and Wildcat QB slots in one, inexpensive package. Heck, his salary is probably so low, it won't even be reflected in the cap If this kid works out, he'll be a huge value saver for the Pats for 4+ years. This draft class could be the foundation for the new Dynasty.

cool thanks guys...too bad I missed it would have been fun to see. Got to give him a few reps. If all QBs went down he would be called regardless of if we have 2, 3, or 4.

FAIL.

If he's taking up "QB3" then he can't play except in the fourth quarter.

Why would you run a play that takes the ball out of the hands of the best player in football?

FAIL

The QB3 slot has no such restrictions since it just annotates the third QB on the roster; the emergency QB on the other hand does: Does not count against the 45 man active roster, but if he goes in the game before the 4th quarter, either of the other two QBs can return.
