Default Herald Article By Karen G. today - Huh?

I read the article below this am.

Andrew Walter provides little confidence - BostonHerald.com

Clearly BB wants to add some veteran competition to the Qb mix. Sounds good to me.

This comment by Karen G. stuck out.

"Judging by what’s gone on at practice, it looks very much like O’Connell needed to have a fire lit under him. Maybe he was getting a little too complacent with his role and they want him to have to earn the job."

Has anyone seen O'Connell acting/performing in a way that would lend to the notion that he is not cut out for this program? I wish she would have provided some examples that would back her assessment. I have not been to TC yet (going Friday) so I personally cannot comment on what the basis may be for her commentary.

She goes on to write this, which I don't disagree with.

"If they were really worried about O’Connell, and didn’t think he was going to develop, they would have signed someone who would have been a clear-cut No. 2 like Brian Griese, someone who would have eliminated any thought of competition."

Thoughts?

Karen doesn't like Walter.

We're all just guessing, my guess is that they will want the backup to know the offense more than Walter will by Week 1 and the O'Connell is entrenched as the backup but they see more developmental potential in Walter than in Gutierrez.

Her comment starts with "maybe" and offers no supporting evidence, other than Walter's presence. Pure conjecture on her part, unfounded in any observed behaviour of K O'C. Somewhat irresponsible.

KOC has struggled out of the gate. TB didn't in year 2. Neither did MC. Both earned the #2 slot. KOC had it handed to him by default. I do think BB is sending a message. Especially since Hoyer and Walter have been getting the majority snaps for a couple of days. The message is earn it NOW.

If she said that he was making all kinds of mental mistakes and BB was making him run to Wrentham and back, then her conjecture would be a little more founded.

The evidence is there. It's in the snaps. Including Hoyers.

FWIW I opined that Gutz would be the first casualty if BB was concerned about KOC. Tommy's pal who doesn't post much here anymore said over on the planet that Gutz has shoulder concerns. So they likely needed someone they felt they could count on with some potential for advancement behind the kid who is where he is by default. The job is still clearly KOC's to loose, but they want someone who can play behind him in case he does...as well as someone who can legitimately push him so he doesn't continue to believe the job remains his by default.

It's fun to talk Hoyer with him...
