Default Mike Reiss chat

One interesting question that I think Reiss was mixed up on...

[Comment From jrpelotte]
Mike, with all these draft picks being signed you have to think that vince Wilfork is wondering when he gets his deal. Have you heard any thing?

Mike Reiss:

Doesn't sound to me, from the people I've spoken with, that there has been much progress there at this point for a long-term deal.

Sounds like hes trying to say hasnt been much progress for a long term deal..

i was wondering about that today myself. Since these are all at most 2nd rnd picks its not going to be nearly as expensive singing them, and after they were all singned would Wilfork be next.

Hopefully he wasnt mixed up and really meant what he said that they are making progress.

When i first read it thats what i thought he was saying.... that thy were making progress. This one i don't get, Pro Bowl NT's are hard to find so why treat Wilfork poorly when he wants to play here and would take a fair deal.

I don't see any reason why they'd go out of their way to sign Wilfork now - there's too many unknowns w the CBA. They can franchise him or Seymour next year if they have to. I'm comfortable with both those guys reaching free agency, and our ability to re-sign them next year.

It reads to me that there HASN'T been much progress. As long as Vince isn't planning on holding out that's not much of an issue. We can re-consider next year, the CBA may be clearer, what we have in Brace will be clearer.

Miguel lists the remaining cap at $5M, unless they start to do major restructuring there is no way the can sign Wilfork (or anyone else).

Next year Seymour & Wilfork all hit free agency, one will be franchised, one will likely be gone. That is the way the cookie crumbles.

Miguel's UNOFFICIAL 2009 Patriots Salary Cap Information Page

Last updated on July 11, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

The following figures include the cap impact of the Darius Butler signing and my guesstimates at the cap impact of the Rich Ohrnberger, Nathan Hodel, Al Johnson, Wesley Britt, Russ Hochstein, Chris Hanson, and Terrence Nunn. According to my figures the Patriots' 2009 cap figure is $124,776,058 with 76 signed players and 10 tendered players. The 2009 salary cap is $127,997,000. The Patriots' 2009 adjusted cap is $129,831,466. I like to thank Adamjt13 for providing the information about the Patriots' adjusted cap number. So I have the Pats under their adjusted cap by about $5.055 million. Profootballalltalk.com reported on 5/15 that the Pats were under their adjusted cap by about $5.1 million before the cap was increased by $947,000 so my numbers were off by about $356,000 at that time. That is, the Pats are under their adjusted cap by about $5.4 million.
DISCLAIMERS - My numbers are a snapshot in time. Things will change between the as of date and a future date.

Best case scenario is Brace can play. I'll be Pangloss here.

What do you see happening with Vince Wilfork situation? Can we sign him long-term or is Ron Brace the long term option?
12:40 Mike Reiss: I don't see Wilfork and the Patriots reaching a long-term agreement. I think there will be a short-term incentive to placate Wilfork -- either a bump in salary or an agreement not to franchise him next year if certain parameters are met -- and Wilfork will be play 2009 with some extra motivation to set himself up for a big payday in 2010.

reiss thinks if the pats don't sign him this offseason, he won't be back the following year..

Wilfork is a good player.. But he's not the best NT in the Division.> That honor goes to Jenkins.. Lets see what Brace has..

Interesting. I had no idea Vince needed "placating". Granted I was away so maybe I missed something but the last I knew about a month or so ago Vince stated he was prepared to play and that he'd put any contract thoughts behind him for now. That and he very much wants to stay with the Patriots-he Loves it here. So unless something's happened since then I don't get why Mike has that impression about Vince

At that time Mike ran a "Vince's Contract" column along these same lines and I remember some of us questioned it even then.

Unless there's been recent negative news out of Vince's camp, I'm not going to worry about it this year.
